Top 10 Most Comfortable SUVs on Sale Today

0
0

When it first entered our common lexicon, the “Sport Utility Vehicle” moniker was reserved for wagon-style vehicles riding on traditional truck platforms.

Those truck underpinnings tended to produce durable, robust vehicles, often with some off-road acumen, but they also frequently resulted in an unsavory ride.

Today, the SUV label is often expanded to encompass their car-based Crossover Utility Vehicle cousins. Those vehicles tend to be smoother and more livable than the truck-based SUVs of the past, leading to high consumer expectations when it comes to comfort. As a result, the new-vehicle market is positively lousy with plush, cozy utility vehicles, capable of carrying you and yours to whatever destination in luxury.

Below, we’ve picked out the ten most comfortable SUVs on the market in 2019, listed in no particular order:

Buick Enclave

2018 buick enclave avenir

Based on the same mechanicals as the GMC Acadia and the more downmarket Chevrolet Traverse, the Buick Enclave elevates these underpinnings into the realm of the premium. Its suspension is soft and supple, insulating occupants well from even the most uncouth of roads, and even the base Preferred trim comes with Active Noise Cancellation and other effective sound-deadening measures.

What’s more, the Enclave delivers best-in-class cargo space without sacrificing its impressive sense of roominess, and leather upholstery is standard on all but the base trim level. The standard 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat is easy to adjust just how you want it, and standard adjustable lumbar support on both front seats is a standout feature on such a reasonably priced vehicle.

Land Rover Range Rover

The most expensive SUV on our list (we had to draw the line somewhere), the Land Rover Range Rover is a bona fide luxury icon with the ride and comfort to match.

With a price tag well over the U.S. median household income, it had better be.

A gargantuan panoramic moonroof and leather-appointed 16-way-adjustable heated front seats are standard – yes, standard – and a beautiful Walnut veneer is worn across much of the dash. But what we love most about the Land Rover Range Rover is, of course, how it glides over the road – an attribute possessed largely thanks to its air suspension.

Unlike most of the other vehicles on this list, the Range Rover was developed to be a true, capable off-roader, and if its suspension can dampen against rocks and ruts, the occasional pothole ain’t nothing.

Chevrolet Suburban

One of two truck-based SUVs on this list, the Chevrolet Suburban is a gargantuan bit of mass-market utility vehicle.

Fun fact: “Suburban” is also considered the longest-running continuous-use nameplate in automotive history, having first adorned a Chevrolet station wagon all the way back in 1935.

But forget about its depression-era origins; today’s Suburban is anything but austere. Even at the base trim level you get a leather-wrapped steering wheel and power adjustable front seats, and the interior is well laid-out and uncluttered. In true GM fashion, the materials and switch gear could stand to look and feel a bit nicer, but the ergonomics are all well-sorted, and having such a large footprint, there is plenty of room to spread out.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

2019 Jeep® Grand Cherokee Summit

If there were an award for comfort-per-dollar, the Jeep Grand Cherokee might well be in the running.

Roomy and nicely styled on the inside, the Grand Cherokee’s standout virtues are a cushy, quiet ride and a cabin devoid of any obvious, glaring signs of chintziness.

It’s quite long-in-the-tooth by now, having last been redesigned for the 2011 model year, but it continues to exemplify comfort in the mid-size SUV category.

That 2011 redesign saw the Grand Cherokee adopt a four-wheel independent suspension for the first time, which contributes to its gentle on-road manners. Other automakers could learn a thing or two from the Jeep about how to make a driver’s seat; the base Laredo trim gets a 12-way adjustable seat that includes 4-way adjustability for the lumbar support. In addition, standard acoustic glass for the windshield and front doors help keep the noise of the outside world where it belongs.

Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai has come a long way in the U.S. over the past two decades, and for proof, look no further than the Santa Fe.

All-new for 2019, the Santa Fe is billed as the “family-first SUV,” and that boast is well earned; it’s an astonishingly well-appointed vehicle, especially at its price point, with good ergonomics and impressive fit and finish.

The sound deadening has been improved over the discontinued third-generation model, rendering the cabin more serene and peaceful than any sub-$30,000 SUV has any right to have. It speaks to Hyundai’s evolution as an automaker that such an inexpensive vehicle should feel so quiet, well-mannered, and cozy.

And while it’s not as large as many of the other vehicles on this list, the five-seat Hyundai Santa Fe never gets to feeling cramped or claustrophobic. Bravo.

Lexus RX

2018 lexus rx 350 f sport

It should come as no surprise that Toyota’s dedicated luxury brand offers one of the more luxurious crossovers on the market today: the Lexus RX.

Its current fifth-generation design dropped for the 2015 model year, boasting a 2-inch increase in wheelbase and all the extra cabin space that implies. The interior is, unsurprisingly, well-crafted and upscale, with standard supple NuLuxe faux-leather upholstery, or the option of even-more-supple semi-aniline perforated leather.

Most impressively, even the performance-oriented F Sport models can deliver a smooth, inoffensive ride on the road that belies their competent handling. This is thanks to an Adaptive Variable Suspension with 650 levels of damping stiffness, part of an available Performance Package.

Volkswagen Atlas

volkswagen atlas

Unlike many of the SUVs on this list, the Volkswagen Atlas – VW’s two-year-old mid-size crossover – won’t blow you away with its abundance of rich standard comfort and convenience features. The base driver’s seat is a run-of-the-mill 6-way manual adjustable unit, and real leather upholstery doesn’t come into play until the top SEL Premium trim level.

What it offers instead is a thoughtful, handsome interior design with superior ergonomics, and the sort of supreme fit and finish that we’ve come to expect from Germany’s people’s car company. Dual-zone climate control comes standard, and there are vents for second- and third-row passengers from the base trim level up.

The ride can get a bit choppy over rough pavement, but in most any other circumstances, it’s the cozy, comfy, well-put-together family hauler you would expect.

Ford Expedition

The second of the two proper truck-based SUVs on this list, the Ford Expedition was a home run for the Blue Oval, arriving for the 2018 model year more well-styled, capable, and competitive than ever. Sure, you could spring for the more expensive Lincoln Navigator, which is essentially a gussied-up version of the very same vehicle, but the Expedition offers somewhere around 90 to 95 percent of the premium look and feel without the upcharge.

Both are based on the popular Ford F-150’s underpinnings, lending them a well-mannered ride, thoughtful design, and very manageable handling. An 8-way adjustable power driver’s seat with lumbar support comes standard, and Ford’s acoustic engineers have managed to keep unwanted noise at bay within the cabin.

Subaru Forester

One doesn’t need to spend an arm and a leg for comfort, and as affordable compact SUVs go, the Subaru Forester delivers.

The Forester was completely redesigned for 2018, and nice, soft-touch materials adorn all the usual touch points. The seats are comfortable, despite limited adjustability on the base model, and the dash is well laid-out and pleasant to the eye. Most importantly, the re-engineered chassis manages to be rigid without rattling anyone’s teeth out; Subaru’s engineers set out with the aim of making the suspension, not the body, do the hard work of absorbing bumps in the road – and off-road, for that matter. In that, they were successful, giving the Forester a pleasant, cushy ride fitting of a much more expensive SUV.

Lincoln Aviator

Brand new for 2020, the Lincoln Aviator is Ford’s luxurious, premium take on its own all-new Explorer SUV, and it’s a beautifully executed paradigm of American luxury.

The base model features cozy, heated 10-way adjustable power front seats with driver’s seat memory, upholstered in a soft faux leather, while Lincoln’s ludicrously adjustable 30-way seats are available on higher trims. The rest of the materials, from the basic Standard trim up to the top-of-the-line Black Label and Black Label Grand Touring, are pleasant to see and to touch, with effective use of veneers across the dash and nice, soft-touch materials in key places.

Looking at the cabin side-by-side with that of the new Ford Explorer, it’s apparent straight away that the differences are more than superficial; serious effort has been poured into making the Aviator a uniquely posh vehicle next to its less luxurious stablemate. The result is a truly premium-feeling SUV with oodles of comfort and class.

2021 AutoGuide.com Utility Vehicle of the Year: Meet the Contenders

0
0

Utility vehicles continued to dominate the sales charts this year—and here are the best ones.

Even in a year as … unique … as 2020, we saw plenty of new and revised utility vehicles launch. Some were good, but these ones were great, and they represent the finalists of the 2021 AutoGuide.com Utility Vehicle of the Year awards.

For more 2021 AutoGuide.com Awards information, check out the other categories:

Everybody wants crossovers, it seems. Automakers are scrambling to produce enough to match demand, even crafting new categories to drop them in. A few years ago, it was the coupe-style crossovers (“coupeovers”); now, it’s the plus-sized-sub-compact SUV. It’s not quite a compact—a misnomer on its own these days—but it’s not a straight-forward sub-compact SUV either.

The 2021 Kia Seltos is the best example of this new breed. It majors on the Korean brand’s longstanding reputation for value, offering more interior space than anything else in this fledgling segment. Up in the plain ol’ compact SUV segment, Nissan has given us a whole new Rogue for 2021. The brand’s best-seller needed to be good, as this is the most fiercely competitive segment in America. A high-end interior and a renewed focus on tech makes it a hugely appealing package. Toyota revived the Venza nameplate this year, sticking it on a new two-row SUV that shares its platform with both the RAV4 and Highlander. In terms of size it slots in between the two, but comes only in hybrid form. It’s a very different proposition to the old, overgrown Camry wagon model: this is a smooth cruiser, with enough luxury trappings to make you think twice about buying that Lexus.

Our other two mainstream finalists are both domestic offerings, but couldn’t be more different. The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban are both big, bulky three-row SUVs, sitting on modified truck platforms and powered by equally sizeable V8s. But they also come in diesel form, and a redesigned rear suspension vastly improves ride and interior space. Meanwhile, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is a horse of a different color. This all-electric mid-sizer has a goal of bringing EV motoring to the mainstream, with a dash of the fun that the Mustang name promises.

In the luxury fight, we’ve got two Mercedes three-row SUVs: the petite GLB and the gargantuan GLS. They take two different approaches to the layout, but both feel true to the badge, blending luxury with everyday usability. The 2021 Cadillac Escalade is a homegrown foil to the big GLS: no less luxurious, but arguably even more tech crammed in. Land Rover redid the iconic Defender for 2021, keeping its hardcore off-roading ability but adding welcome on-road manners. And lastly, we have the newcomer from Korea, the Genesis GV80. It’s the first big high-rider from the brand, but it’s a deeply impressive one, immediately putting the competition on notice with a smooth drive and the best interior in the class.

Like our other end-of-year awards, this isn’t a head-to-head comparison. We’re comparing each of these models against the standards of their respective classes. Do they shift the needle? They better, not just within their category but, ideally, across the industry. We’ve also only included vehicles our team has driven. That unfortunately means a few models slipped through the cracks that 2020 caused, like the highly anticipated Ford Bronco Sport.

For Car and Utility of the year, we’ve split the award into Overall, Mainstream, and Luxury sub-categories. You’ll find the 10 Utility of the Year finalists below, in alphabetical order. Our team will vote on each category over the coming weeks, and we’ll announce the winners early February. Stay tuned!

Utility of the Year (Mainstream)

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban

Chevrolet updated its big rigs this year, with both the Tahoe and Suburban getting new looks, a new rear suspension, and even more imposing dimensions. Naturally there’s more room inside now, but it’s the suspension rethink that’s unlocked the lion’s share of the added passenger space. The third row no longer feels like a penalty box for adults, even in the Tahoe. The independent rear suspension also vastly increases cargo space—plus, it makes for a smoother ride. That’s what we call a win-win.

SEE ALSO: 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe First Drive Review: Raising the Standard

Both of these big boys come with three engine options: two gas V8s and a torque turbodiesel. All three offer serious stump-pulling power: Chevy knows that Tahoe and Suburban buyers use these things for actual towing. The trim options have also ballooned with this generation: the RST, High Country, and Z71 go from being options packages on the previous truck to dedicated trims for 2021. The off-road-ready Z71 currently only comes in V8 form, but Chevy promises the diesel will eventually join the lineup. The Bow Tie predicts the lux High Country and Premier trims will account for most of the sales of these two. That might suggest these rigs could step on the toes of the Escalade—found elsewhere on this page—but Chevrolet says they all cater to distinct parts of the market. The Tahoe definitely has value on its side, starting at barely over $50,000 for a two-wheel drive model, and topping out at $73,000 for the High Country.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Everyone has an opinion on the 2021 Mustang Mach-E. How could you not? It’s an EV. It’s a coupe-styled crossover. Oh, and it’s got one of the most beloved automotive badges right there on its nose. Yep, that’ll do it.

SEE ALSO: 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Review: First Drive

The Mustang Mach-E could have been a marketing disaster. But we’ve driven it, and it’s genuinely good. The Mustang ties are admittedly pretty vague right now—wait for the higher-performance GT model for that—but the Mach-E is hardly the anodyne driving experience some might’ve feared. It rides and steers smoothly, with the near-silence only an EV can manage. Power ranges from 266 to 346 horsepower, depending on battery size and rear- or all-wheel drive. Pair the long-distance battery with rear-drive and you’re looking at 300 miles (482 km) of range per charge. DC fast-charging offers up 60 miles (96 km) of range in 10 minutes, or a refill to 80 percent in 45. Ford has also taken a step forward on the infotainment front, fitting the Mach-E with a huge, tablet-style screen in the middle of the dash. Very subtle, guys. A secondary screen sits in front of the driver, carrying all the pertinent information. Next year, the Blue Oval’s own take on semi-autonomous driving will arrive on the Mach-E. All this starts at $43,995 ($52,395 CAD) before any green-car incentives.

2021 Kia Seltos

Kia just can’t miss these days. There was the Stinger. Then the Telluride. This year the Korean brand went smaller for both cars and crossovers, dropping the excellent K5 and this, the Seltos. In an age of ever-growing models, the Seltos asks the serious question: do you really need a “compact” crossover?

SEE ALSO: 2021 Kia Seltos EX Review: Where Do Its Priorities Lie?

This pint-size model offers nearly as much passenger and storage space as the next class up, in a more manageable footprint. All but a single trim comes with standard all-wheel drive, a feature that’s not as common as you’d think, especially in this end of the market. Kia bundles in plenty of driver assists and amenities too, including an available wireless charging pad, auto climate control, Highway Driving Assist, and the Telluride’s large, 10.25-inch infotainment screen. Despite all these big-car features, pricing starts at $23,110 ($24,790 CAD), and tops out under $30,000 all-in ($34,390 CAD). Again, we ask: do you really need a compact crossover?

Loading …

2021 Nissan Rogue

Nissan needs the 2021 Rogue to be good. It’s the brand’s best-selling model, competing in the largest, most cut-throat segment in the market. The Japanese brand has thoroughly overhauled this SUV, starting with a stiffer, more modern platform as a foundation. From there it’s layered on better NVH, more assertive styling, a premium-feeling interior, and lots of screen real estate.

SEE ALSO: 2021 Nissan Rogue Review: First Drive

The Rogue is all about the details. Take the available quilted leather seats: where else are you going to find that in this class? How about the rear doors, which open to nearly 90 degrees, making it easier for the very young and very old alike to get in and out? Nissan has clearly given some thought to how people use their crossovers on a daily basis.

A single engine option exists for the Rogue: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, hooked up to a CVT, sending power to either the front axle or both. Pricing starts at $26,745 ($30,328 CAD), including destination, stretching to around $40,000 on either side of the border.

Loading …

2021 Toyota Venza

Talk about a glow-up. The old Venza was an unloved model arguably ahead of its time: it predicted the oncoming onslaught of car-based crossovers. In that sense, this reborn Venza is more of the same, but it’s traded the ungainly looks of old for a svelte, stylish wrapper. More importantly, it also comes with just one drivetrain option: a hybrid-powered AWD setup.

SEE ALSO: 2021 Toyota Venza Review: First Drive

With 219 horsepower, the Venza isn’t the quickest of the larger two-row SUV crowd. But you’re unlikely to notice, as this is a ride tailor-made for calm cruising. You’ll probably need to stop for your own reasons before it needs gas too, since the Venza posts an impressive 39 mpg average (6.1 L/100 km). The interior is a great place to spend hours in, thanks to high-quality materials and what is easily the Venza’s coolest feature: the “Star Gaze” electrochromic glass roof, which goes from frosted to clear at the touch of a button. The Venza nails the premium feeling so well we can’t think of a single reason to buy the Lexus NX over it. Pricing starts at $33,645 ($40,330 in Canada).

Utility of the Year (Luxury)

2021 Cadillac Escalade

The Escalade has gone widescreen. Cadillac’s de facto halo model benefits from all the same improvements as its proletariat Chevy siblings up-page, but naturally gets its own add-ons to justify the inflated price tag. The easiest to spot inside this beast is the huge 38-inch digital screen, spanning most of the dashboard. It feels suitably high-tech, and easily a match for the systems you find in the German competition. An available night vision setup is invaluable on dark roads, and soon, GM’s industry-leading Super Cruise system will join the Escalade’s bounty of features.

SEE ALSO: 2021 Cadillac Escalade Review: Ghost Protocol

With a powerful 6.2-liter V8 underhood (a 3.0-liter diesel is also available), the Escalade is the definition of effortless progress. It rides with a level of grace seemingly impossible for something the size of a city condo, thanks to the one-two of the independent rear suspension and the standard air suspension. Pricing starts at a heady $77,490 ($91,998 CAD), but the Escalade feels worth it. As managing editor Kshitij Sharma says, “Cadillac has created something worthy of a standing ovation.”

Loading …

2021 Genesis GV80

The year kicked off with the debut of the Genesis GV80, the Korean brand’s first SUV, so it feels poetic to now end on it. Genesis spent the last few years establishing its luxury sport credentials with its sedans, including the G70, our 2019 Car of the Year. It couldn’t avoid the way the industry winds were blowing though, and the GV80 is at least as impressive for its class as that car was for sport sedans two years ago.

SEE ALSO: 2021 Genesis GV80 Review: First Drive

What’s immediately striking about the GV80 is how holistic it feels. Everything meshes together. The styling—the first clean-sheet example of Genesis’ “Athletic Elegance” look—makes a strong statement on the road, imposing but not brash. The ride is smooth: not as sporty as the competition (and we’re not even talking the M and AMG variants), but calm, collected, and very quiet. A whole new infotainment system ditches the borrowed-Hyundai setup of old, with pretty menus and a low learning curve. Best of all is the interior itself, plush and inviting no matter which perch you find yourself in. Some things don’t change, though: in this case, it’s Genesis’ reputation for value, with the GV80 starting at just under $50,000 ($65,000 CAD). It’s a designer bargain, like a Zegna suit at Zara pricing.

Loading …

2021 Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender is an icon. It’s no wonder it took the British company what felt like eons to replace it. This new-age Defender is different in a lot of ways, but what hasn’t changed is its ability to make short work of gnarly off-road trails. Under those smoother, modern looks is a gloriously complicated chassis which makes that possible.

SEE ALSO: 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 Review: First Drive

The interior experience is also bang up to date, thanks to inspired material choices, a clean dash design, and—thankfully—a new touchscreen interface. The Defender feels like a genuinely premium item, which makes sense now that pricing starts over $50,000 ($65,000 CAD). Despite that, you can still hose the interior down after a particularly adventurous trail.

A mild-hybrid, twin-charged inline-six engine powers the Defender 110, producing 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. That’s plenty to ford streams with, but more importantly, it turns the Defender into a smooth highway cruiser in-between your amateur cartographer sessions.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 in Polar White

Mercedes has plugged the gap between GLA and GLC, both of which are two-row crossovers, with this, the three-row GLB. Are you confused? Yeah, so were we, until we drove it. The GLB makes almost too much sense. The optional way-back is designed for occasional use: a sticker on the rear doors makes it clear those much over 5’6″ shouldn’t even attempt it. That’s fine: those looking to buy this affordable little ‘ute probably aren’t shuttling most of an adult baseball team from A to B. But if they have two kids, and both want to bring a friend? You’ve got a solution, all in a footprint barely bigger than a RAV4.

SEE ALSO: 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 Review: Scratching the Niche

The GLB is just as easy to drive as other smaller Mercs, too. It uses the same basic platform as the excellent A-Class, providing it with a smooth, easy-going road demeanor. Available all-wheel drive (standard in Canada) ensures foul-weather security, too. A turbocharged 2.0-liter sits under the bluff nose, pushing out 221 hp in GLB 250 guise, or 302 hp for the hotter GLB 35 AMG. Fuel efficiency is better than most other non-hybrid three-rows on the market, averaging 26 mpg (9.0 L/100 km).

Best of all, the GLB is one of the most affordable ways into Merc ownership, starting at around $37,000 ($45,000 CAD). A luxury German model that’s not just practical, but affordable? It’s what makes the GLB so easy for us to recommend.

Loading …

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS

Mercedes scores not just one but two finalists spots thanks to this, the GLS. The gargantuan SUV saw a full redesign in 2020, finally stepping into the role as the S-Class of the brand’s SUV lineup.

SEE ALSO: 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 Review: Wafting Wunderkind

Sure, there’s an AMG version of this big boy, because of course there is, but don’t fall for it. The GLS is all about pampering. In GLS 580 trim, it pairs a slightly detuned version of the AMG’s turbocharged V8 to a mild-hybrid system, seamlessly providing even more torque when requested. An electronically-controlled air suspension smothers anything the road can throw at it, helping the GLS glide serenely across vast stretches of land. Best of all, the brand’s excellent MBUX infotainment system is present here, offering myriad customization options, quick responses, and lots of eye candy. Pricing starts at a suitably Merc-like $77,000, or just shy of six figures in Canada. Even optioned-up, the GLS feels worth it.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Teaser

The range-topper will come in fully-electric form … but not at launch.

Land Rover is prepping the next generation of the brand’s icon. The current Range Rover has been with us since 2012, but next Tuesday, we’ll see its fifth-generation replacement in full. Ahead of that, the British luxury brand has released the first teaser of what company CCO Gerry McGovern “the most desirable Range Rover ever created.”

However accurate that claim may or may not be, this first teaser does suggest the latest Rangie will feature an evolutionary design. The blurred profile shot makes it clear that the general proportions remain intact, with clean surfacing, a big wheels, and blacked-out pillars for a “floating” roof look. A single character line runs from the tip of the headlights right back to the tailgate. We expect more changes inside, specifically on the tech side, as McGovern teased “the flawless tranquil sanctuary of its cabin” in the accompanying press release.

SEE ALSO: 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 Review: First Drive

The fifth-generation Range Rover will use JLR’s MLA platform, enabling it to come in series hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric flavors. Rumors persist that the supercharged V8 will bow out, and a turbocharged BMW unit will replace it. It would be a return to form: back at the turn of the century, the third-gen model debuted with Bavarian powerplants.

The luxury SUV landscape has dramatically changed in the decade since the current Range Rover debuted. Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Alpina and Maybach have all joined the fray, plus Aston Martin and Lamborghini on the smaller, sportier end. We expect the next Range Rover to shift further upmarket to give the rest of the Land Rover SUV lineup some breathing room. We’ll know more about the range-topper next Tuesday, October 26, when Land Rover livestreams the reveal on its official site at 15:40 EST. Stay tuned.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Debuts with Three Rows, Upcoming PHEV and EV

0
0

Plug-in hybrid models arrive for 2023; full-electric model comes one year later.

Here it is, officially. Land Rover has taken the wraps off the fifth-generation Range Rover, the British luxury brand’s high-rolling icon. Don’t let the evolutionary design fool you: there’s a lot of change going on under the skin, from a whole new engine lineup, four-wheel steering, predictive air suspension, and other high-tech goodies.

Let’s tackle that new wrapper, shall we? The nouveau Rangie adopts an even cleaner design language than before, with large expanses of smooth sheet metal. It’s bigger in every direction, though the huge wheels keep the proportions in check. A new glazing process results in crisp contrast between body and glass, and flush-fitting handles emphasize the clean surfaces.Land Rover has stuck to the “floating roof” look as well, utilizing black pillars.

The one major change happens out back, with a gloss black, sideways C-shape serving as both trim and taillights. Land Rover says this is the first instance of taillights that are hidden until needed, and that’s technically true: Hyundai has been doing it with headlights, after all.

SEE ALSO: 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 Review: First Drive

Back to the chassis. The 2022 Range Rover now rides on JLR’s MLA-Flex architexture. This mixed-metal platform allows for a variety of advanced technology, including mild and plug-in hybrid models. The latter will arrive for the 2023 model year, and a year later, we’ll see the all-electric Range Rover. Every model also comes with rear-wheel steering, which can steer the rear axle up to seven degrees either with or in contrast to the front axle. This gives the RR a turning circle of 36 feet (12 meters); the tightest of any production Land Rover.

Also part of the tech suite is an adaptive air suspension that reads the road ahead, pre-emptively adjusting for any upcoming bumps and other nastiness. Land Rover calls this eHorizon Navigation. The fully independent suspension now includes the brand’s first five-link rear axle. Of course, this being a Land Rover, there’s the requisite Terrain Response 2 system, with six different drive modes to tackle all manner of off-road situations. Drivers also have the option to manually adjust settings for a custom setup.

SEE ALSO: Jeep Wrangler vs Toyota 4Runner Comparison

Once again the Range Rover comes in both short- and long-wheelbase lengths. The latter now offers the option of a third row, while a five-seat setup is standard. The five-seat model also includes a new power-folding cargo cover in the rear, which allows access to the space without opening the lower portion of the split tailgate. Feeling especially fancy? The SV Signature Suite setup swaps in a swanky four-seat setup.

Who are we kidding? this is a Range Rover; they’re all swanky. The interior is awash with leather and open-pore wood. Range Rover also offers a wider variety of alternative fabrics, including animal-free products. A curved, 13.1-inch screen houses the latest version of Land Rover’s Pivi Pro system, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and native Alexa functionality. It also features haptic feedback. A 13.7-inch digital instrument panel sits ahead of the driver, and is fully customizable. An optional second-row entertainment setup adds a pair of 11.4-inch touchscreens.

Land Rover says the new platform has resulted in a 24-percent improvement in NVH. Helping achieve that is an available 35-speaker Meridian sound system with third-generation active noise cancellation. The system uses in-headrest speakers to pump an opposing signal through, cancelling any pesky road, tire, and wind noise.

Under the hood are two choices of engines at launch. Jaguar’s mild-hybrid inline-six is standard, pumping out the same 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft it does elsewhere. A V8 is still optional, but this one is a BMW-sourced 4.4-liter eight-pot. It spits out 523 hp and 553 lb-ft.

Starting next year, a plug-in hybrid Range Rover will also be available, augmenting the six-cylinder with a larger battery and electric motor. The important figures are 434 hp and an electric-only range of 62 miles (100 km). 2023 will also bring the high-end Range Rover SV, an SVO-fettled range-topper boasting unique design themes. In 2024, Land Rover will release a fully-electric Range Rover.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover is now available to order in Canada and the US. American pricing starts at $105,350 for the six-cylinder SE, including destination. A V8 model starts from $120,050. Graduating to a LWB SE tacks another $6,000 onto the bottom line. Meanwhile the high-end Autobiography and First Editions start over $150,000. Canadian pricing begins at $126,400 CAD before destination, and runs all the way up to a $182,000 short-wheelbase First Edition.

Off-Road SUVs: Our Top Picks

0
0

The market may be all about the SUV, but these ones are true to the origin of the breed.

Families have gravitated towards SUVs and crossovers for years now, due to the increased ride height, practicality, and (usually) all-wheel drive. In an ironic twist, lots of crossovers have become even more car-like over the years, dropping closer to the ground, and gaining the sorts of road-friendly tires incapable of handling more than a flower bed.

The SUVs you’ll find on this list are not that type of vehicle. These are rugged, go-anywhere vehicles, ones where the adventure begins where the road ends.

SEE ALSO: The Only 15 ‘Real’ SUVs Left on the Market

As more and more people want to get out there and explore, we’ve put together a Top 10 list of the best off-road SUVs on the market today. Each entry offers something unique, providing you with the info you need for your next purchase. Here, in alphabetical order, are our top picks.

Ford Bronco

2021 Ford Bronco First Drive Review

SEE ALSO: 2021 Ford Bronco First Drive Review: The Real Deal

We’ll start with some good news right off the bat: yes, the Ford Bronco lives up to the hype. This rugged revival is the first serious challenger to the Jeep Wrangler in decades. Coming in both two- and four-door versions, with two turbocharged engine options, the Bronco will scramble up rocky hills and ford rivers with the best of them. It’s a thirsty one, though. Pricing starts from $30,795 USD ($43,094 CAD) including destination.

Ford Bronco Sport

SEE ALSO: 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Review: Full of Bucking Character

No, there isn’t an echo in here. We like the charming little Bronco Sport, the crossover-based baby brother to the big ol’ horse above. It might share a platform with the Escape—including a 1.5-liter three-cylinder and torquey 2.0-liter four-pot—but the BroSpo’s available torque-vectoring AWD system lends it some goat-like abilities on the rough stuff. Not just for its size and class, but overall. This one also undercuts its big brother by a few thousand, making it friendly on the wallet.

GMC Yukon AT4

Need something a little more big-boned? How about the GMC Yukon, specifically the AT4? The truck brand’s off-road-oriented AT4 trim comes with its own unique exterior treatment, complete with tow hooks, providing it with better approach and departure angles than the regular Yukon. AT4 models are 4WD only, and come with an air suspension for the maximum amount of ground clearance. A 5.3-liter V8 is standard, with a hearty 6.2-liter available, with maximum tow ratings of up to 7,900 lb.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

SEE ALSO: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee First Drive Review: Back On Top

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a stalwart of the SUV world; a crossover before the term was widespread, really. The latest model launched in three-row form for 2021, but the one we’re zeroing in on here is the classic two-row. New for 2022, it launched with the rock-climbing Trailhawk model. Now featuring an air suspension and trick disconnecting front stabilizer bar from the Wrangler, the Grand Cherokee has 11.3 inches of ground clearance, plus a 35.7-degree approach angle and 30.2-degree departure angle. Prices start from a reasonable $39,185 ($53,640 CAD), including destination.

Jeep Wrangler

SEE ALSO: 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Review: First Drive

Having a list of off-roaders without the Wrangler is like a round-up of hockey’s greatest without Gretzky. Jeep’s icon comes in a myriad of configurations, which no doubt contributes to its titanic sales figures every year. What do you want: two-door, four-door, manual transmission, automatic? Jeep’s got ’em. Four-cylinder, with or without mild-hybrid? Classic V6? Sure thing. How about a diesel? There’s one of those, too. Now there’s a wild V8 version as well, and on the other end of the spectrum, a plug-in hybrid. Off-roading in silence is pretty swell.

Land Rover Defender

SEE ALSO: 2021 Land Rover Defender 90 Review: The Elegant Off-Roader

Maybe you want just a hint of class to your off-roading. The Land Rover Defender is here to answer that call with a reserved British accent. The storied name now sits on the back of a—gasp—unibody platform, but don’t think that makes the new Defender soft. With lots of ground clearance and all sorts of modern tech, this SUV can make short work of even the gnarliest of trails. Like the Bronco and Wrangler, it comes in two lengths, two-door (90) and four-door (110).

Lexus LX

Sticking to the luxury side of the market, Lexus has totally redone its hulking LX for 2022. Built on the bones of the latest Toyota Land Cruiser—which sadly won’t be making it to these shores—the LX now features a turbocharged V6, pumping out 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The latest Lexus flagship also includes off-road driving modes, a crawl mode, and an array of cameras to act as digital spotters on the trails. Fancy.

Subaru Crosstrek

You don’t need to go big to go off-road. The Subaru Crosstrek is the smallest and most affordable car on our list. Starting at just $23,295 ($25,595 CAD), including destination, the Crosstrek comes with Subaru’s well-regarded AWD system as standard. We’re looking at the Sport (Outdoor in Canada) in particular though, which sees chunkier cladding, an increase in ride height, and the more powerful 2.5-liter boxer-four. This one will handle more serious off-roading than most people will ever really attempt.

Subaru Outback Wilderness

SEE ALSO: 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness Review: First Drive

Another Subaru, you say? The Outback Wilderness takes the basic ingredients we like so much in the smaller Crosstrek, and upsizes them for off-road wagon fun. The Wilderness adds from the factory a lot of what buyers were modifying their Outbacks with, including a bump in ride height, chunky all-terrain tires, tow hooks, and more. Subaru has also revised the X-Mode to handle the different driving surfaces found off-piste. It’ll even ford through shallow streams. Inside, the Wilderness features easy-clean seating surfaces and a large, 11.6-inch central touchscreen.

Toyota 4Runner

The Toyota 4Runner is a mainstay of overlanding groups because it mixes hearty capability with traditional Toyota reliability. The current model dates back to 2009, so while it can’t offer the freshest in tech, the mechanical components are proven. Underhood sits a trusty 4.0-liter V6, hooked up to the last five-speed automatic on the market. It’s thirsty, but the 4WD 4Runner is capable and relatively refined versus the buzzy Wrangler. This can be yours for $38,520 ($48,060 CAD), including destination. Used models aren’t much cheaper, either!

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Looks Great, Packs PHEV Power

0
0

Mild-hybrids, PHEV, and V8 versions arrive at launch; all-electric model debuts next year.

Land Rover on Tuesday revealed the 2023 Range Rover Sport. Like its big brother, the Sport sees a wide range of engine options at launch, including plug-in hybrid and BMW-sourced V8 choices, wrapped in a package with a greater focus on on-road abilities.

The latest Range Rover Sport sees an even cleaner, minimalist style than the outgoing model. Up front, the British brand has fashioned the slimmest headlights in its history, framing what Land Rover calls a “stealth-like” grille. The front bumper features two bifurcated openings pushed to the outer edges, emphasizing the width of the vehicle. That’s the story out back too, where the Sport features horizontal taillights connected via black bar, instead of the vertical units of the regular Rangie. Between the two ends, Land Rover’s design team have kept surfacing super-clean, with just three lines providing the necessary visual tension. This extends to the door handles, which extend electronically.

“Our latest range Rover Sport embraces fully our modernist approach of vehicle design whilst amplifying its unquestionable sporting and confident character,” said Gerry McGovern, CCO of Jaguar Land Rover.

Inside, the Sport deviates from the regular Range Rover with a more reclined center console design, and thinner, “floating” dashboard style. Most everything is covered in leather, though Land Rover also offers sustainable Ultrafabric textiles for the doors and dashboard. Bronze chrome gives a suitably classy vibe, as well. The front seats are 22-way power adjustable, while rear-seat occupants have gained 0.8 inches (20 millimeters) of legroom.

A 13.1-inch curved touchscreen houses JLR’s Pivi Pro system, while a slightly larger 13.7-inch screen now takes up residence behind the steering wheel. Both are customizable, with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, plus Amazon’s Alexa running the show. Other tech goodies include a cabin filtration system; 29-speaker, 1,430-watt Meridian sound system; and active noise cancellation. A high-power 15-watt wireless charger is also standard.

Buyers will get four engine options. The first two are mild-hybrid setups, running Jaguar’s smooth Ingenium inline-six cylinder turbo in 355 and 395 horsepower configurations. Next up is the P440e, a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) that will be available exclusively in the Autobiography trim at launch. JLR estimates an all-electric range of 48 miles (77 kilometers).

Finally, the BMW-sourced twin-turbo V8 sits atop the lineup, producing 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. With launch control (yes, really), it’ll crack off the dash to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 4.3 seconds.

This being a Land Rover, it comes with the brand’s Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control, as well as Terrain Response, which adapts the chassis to better accommodate the current road surface. Every Range Rover Sport comes with air suspension, while the V8 expands this with Dynamic Response Pro, an active roll control system. Rear-wheel steering turns the rear wheels by as much as 7.3 degrees, enhancing low-speed maneuverability and high-speed stability.

New for this generation is the Stormer Handling Pack, also unique to the V8 model. This bundles Dynamic Response Pro, All-Wheel Steering, an electronic active differential with torque vectoring, and Configurable Programs, allowing drivers to create their own spins on the driving modes.

The 2023 Range Rover Sport is available to order now, with prices starting at $84,250 for the P360 SE, and rising to $122,850 for the P530 First Edition. Production will begin soon at the brand’s Solihull facility.

2023 Land Rover Defender 130 Extends An Icon

0
0

The latest Defender model will be the brand’s third three-row offering.

Land Rover on Tuesday revealed the third member of the Defender family, the Defender 130. Continuing the tradition-inspired naming convention of the existing 90 (two-door) and 110 (regular-length four-door), the 130 slots in at the top of the lineup, as the longest and most spacious Defender.

The Defender 130 looks pretty much as you’d expect: like the 110, but with a longer tail. The British brand has added over a foot back there (13.4 inches / 335 millimeters), with a subtle reprofiling along the bottom of the body to account for the visual heft. The changes allow for a departure angle of 28.5 degrees, an impressive figure for three-row SUVs. The 130 model gains its own Sedona Red paint option as well, while buyers will also be able to spec an Extended Bright Pack, which increases the exterior brightwork quotient.

Of course, the stretch makes for big changes inside, with a third row turning the Defender 130 into an eight-seater. Land Rover says the way-back will fit three adults across, and it includes heated seats, padded armrests, and USB-C charging to ensure they’re comfy back there. Also part of the package is a standard second sunroof above the third row, in addition to the panoramic sunroof up front. Exclusive to the eight-seater is the availability of four-zone climate control. As a nod to the 130’s likely primary role, carpeted flooring is standard, too. No hosing down this interior.

SEE ALSO: Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Land Rover Discovery Comparison

Storage space now ranges from 13.7 cubic feet with every seat up, to 80.9 cubes with the back two rows folded flat. Fold just the third row and there’s 43.5 cubic feet to play with. Sliding and folding second-row seats open up access to the third row, which features 40/20/40 folding.

A 10.25-inch touchscreen acts as command central as standard, with an 11.4-inch unit optional (and standard on the X trim). It runs Jaguar Land Rover’s latest Pivi Pro system, which provides sharp graphics and quick responses, not to mention over-the-air (OTA) updates. Defender 130 also supports what3words, a British-developed navigation platform that divides the entire globe into 57 trillion 3m x 3m squares. Each square has its own three-letter name, which Defender 130 drivers can enter directly into the navigation system.

JLR has expanded the interior trim options, with a new natural light oak wood finish. Buyers have a choice of numerous Windsor leather hues, as well as the brand’s Robustec fabric on the X-Dynamic model.

Also debuting in the Defender 130 is JLR’s Cabin Air Purification Plus system. Using nanoe X technology, CAPP reduces virus, bacteria, and odors within the cabin. Owners can also prep the system ahead of time with the Purge function via their smartphone.

SEE ALSO: 2021 Land Rover Defender 90 Review: The Elegant Off-Roader

The Defender 130 sticks to a one-engine lineup, in two states of tune. The smooth Ingenium 3.0-liter inline six is available in P300 (296 horsepower, 347 pound-feet) and P400 (395 hp and 406 lb-ft) guises. Both utilize a mild-hybrid system and a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic, plus standard intelligent all-wheel drive. Adaptive air suspension is standard, allowing for nearly 17 inches of articulation, and 35.4 inches of water fording depth. Ground clearance stands at 11.4 inches. Should buyers want to tow, both trims are capable of up to 8,200 pounds when properly equipped. Buttons inside the cargo hold allow owners to lower the Defender for easier tailgate access.

When it arrives, the 2023 Land Rover Defender 130 will be available multiple trims, including S, SE, X-Dynamic SE, and X. A First Edition will commemorate the launch too, available in either Fuji White, Sedona Red, or Carpathian Grey. The Explorer, Adventure, Country, and Urban option packages are all available as well, just as they are on the 110. Pricing will kick off at $69,350.

Luxury Hybrid SUV: 10 Great Picks

0
0

Enjoying the nicer side of driving and saving fuel don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

Nowadays, nearly every automaker offers at least a few hybrid models. This includes luxury marques, and their SUV lineups are included. The luxury hybrid SUV is a sweet spot in the market, with the premium feel and elevated driving experience buyers crave, while addressing the weak point of the body style: fuel economy.

For the purposes of this list, we’ve excluded “mild hybrids,” those models that use a more powerful integrated starter motor for things like highway coasting or advanced start-stop. Every model on this list is capable of traveling at least a short distance on nothing but electrons. In fact, many of them are plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). Plug-ins allow owners to accomplish most short-distance daily trips without even waking the ICE, making them ideal for urban and suburban folks.

With that in mind, read on for our top 10 luxury hybrid SUV choices, presented in alphabetical order.

Audi Q5 55 TFSI e quattro

Luxury Hybrid SUV

Horsepower: 362 hp

Torque: 369 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: 61 mpg-equivalent / 26 mpg combined

Electric Range: 23 mi / 37 km

Price (USD): $58,395

Price (CAD): $78,800

The Reasoning: Audi’s best-selling model kicks off the list in 55 TFSI e quattro form, Audi-speak for a plug-in hybrid. The electrified Q5 pairs the brand’s ubiquitous 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor and battery pack. This actually makes the Q5 PHEV the most powerful Q5 you can buy on this side of the Atlantic, eclipsing the performance-oriented SQ5.

SEE ALSO: Audi Q5 vs Volvo XC60: Which Compact Luxury SUV is The Better Upscale Value?

The SQ5 can’t drive 23 miles (37 km) on electric power alone, however. The Q5 PHEV is also able to handle highway speeds of up to 84 mph without waking the little four-cylinder engine. Starting from around $60,000 in the US, the Q5 55 TFSI e quattro is a consummate all-rounder.

BMW X5 xDrive45e

Luxury Hybrid SUV

Horsepower: 389 hp

Torque: 443 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: 50 mpg-equivalent / 20 mpg combined

Electric Range: 31 mi / 50 km

Price (USD): $66,795

Price (CAD): $83,180

The Reasoning: The X5 was one of the first luxury SUVs out there. Over four generations, BMW has refined its mid-sizer into a powerhouse in the segment. The X5 is comfortable, spacious, full of modern tech, and pretty darned great to drive, too. BMW offers it in a multitude of flavors, from the pure, rear-drive six-cylinder model, right up to the 617-horsepower X5 M. If it were our money, though, we’d make a beeline for the xDrive45e.

SEE ALSO: 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e PHEV Review: Strong and Silent Type

In a lineup full of talent, the luxury hybrid SUV xDrive45e is the Goldilocks choice. This plug-in model uses the smooth and sweet 3.0-liter inline-six, a BMW classic pairing if ever there was one. From there the folks from Munich include a pair of electric motors and a large 24.0-kWh battery pack. With standard AWD, this handsome rig will do 31 miles (50 km) on nothing but electricity. Drivers also get control over when and how the electric motors are used, and can even top up the charge by way of the ICE. 389 combined system horsepower is more than enough, too. The only real drawback with picking the plug-in X5 is that it can’t include the optional third-row seating.

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

Luxury Hybrid SUV

Horsepower: 443 hp

Torque: 516 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: N/A

Electric Range: 18 mi / 29 km

Price (USD) : $188,000

Price (CAD): $230,000

The Reasoning: When the Germans seem too commonplace, you visit the crew in Crewe. Bentley’s big Bentayga SUV has been on the market for a few years now, with recent additions to the lineup including an extended wheelbase model and this hybrid. This is a drivetrain we’ll see a little later in the list; here, it’s good for a healthy 443 horsepower, courtesy of a 3.0-liter turbo-V6 and electric motor combo.

SEE ALSO: How Does the Bentley Bentayga’s Fancy Suspension Work?

Being at least double the price of most everything else on this list, the Bentayga offers a similarly elevated driving experience. Air suspension and adaptive damping are standard, ensuring a smooth ride. Lush carpeting, fine leather, and thick, insulated glass combine to keep the outside world far from the serene cabin. Sure, its electric-only range barely gets Jeeves to the kid’s private school and back, but it’s a start. Speaking of starting: that $188,000 sticker is just the beginning, as Bentley offers myriad customization options to push the Bentayga even higher.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

Horsepower: 375 hp

Torque: 475 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: 56 mpg-equivalent / 23 mpg combined

Electric Range: 26 mi / 42 km

Price (USD): $61,600

Price (CAD): $73,200

The Reasoning: With a full refresh for the 2022 model year, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has graduated into a genuine luxury vehicle, especially in the higher grades. Open-pore wood and soft leather give the GC cabin a distinctly American vibe, and it continues to be as handy off-road as it is on the tarmac. While there are six- and eight-cylinder models to choose from, we like the 4xe plug-in hybrid. This setup, which first appeared in the Wrangler, unites a 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor, producing a system total of 375 hp and 475 lb-ft. For those keeping score, that’s more twist than the V8.

SEE ALSO: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe First Drive Review: The One You Want

Like many of the other luxury hybrid SUV plug-ins on this list, the Grand Cherokee 4xe allows drivers to choose when it runs on just battery power. Want to run that trail in near-silence to really appreciate the sounds of nature? You got it. Higher trims pile on the tech, including things like night vision, but the 4xe starts at a reasonable $61,600 including destination. Do note that you’re limited to the two-row setup if you’re going plug-in; the three-row Grand Cherokee L skips it.

Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring

Luxury Hybrid SUV

Horsepower: 494 hp

Torque: 630 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: 56 mpg-equivalent / 23 mpg combined

Electric Range: 21 mi / 34

Price (USD): $70,385

Price (CAD): $87,895

The Reasoning: Sticking with the American luxury hybrid SUV angle, we have the penultimate model in the Lincoln walk, the Aviator. This three-row SUV comes with a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6, but the Grand Touring further augments all that turbo torque with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Horsepower is up to 494 hp, making this the most powerful entry on the list.

SEE ALSO: 2021 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring Review: Mixed Signals

That being said, the Aviator isn’t a performance machine. This big boy is all about comfort, with available 30-way adjustable front seats. Yes, thirty. That’s only two more than the number of speakers included with the optional Revel sound system. Even if you don’t check that particular box, the Aviator includes sounds from Detroit Orchestra, and the chrome switchgear dotting the cabin looks fit for big band duty. The Aviator has one of the shortest EV-only ranges out there, but to make up for that, it can also tow a remarkable [INSERT].

Land Rover Range Rover P440e

Luxury Hybrid SUV

Horsepower: 434 hp

Torque: 406 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: N/A

Electric Range: 51 mi / 82 km (est)

Price (USD): $109,875

Price (CAD): $137,895

The Reasoning: The Land Rover Range Rover is the de facto luxury SUV measuring stick. The S-Class of high-riders. Land Rover’s crown jewel entered a new generation for 2022, and it moved even further upmarket, with top models treading into Bentayga territory. Like the other Brit on this list, the Rangie comes in two lengths, one of which offers a plug-in powertrain.

SEE ALSO: 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Review: Gold Standard of Luxury SUVs

Opt for the Range Rover P440e and you’ll find a silky-smooth inline-six under the hood. Land Rover pairs that with an 105.0-kW motor, with a 38.2-kWh battery under the floor. Official EPA figures for fuel economy are unavailable, but the all-electric range is quoted at 51 miles (82 km). You still get all the luxury features expected in the Rangie too, including 20-way adjustable leather seats, a solar attenuating windshield, three-zone climate control, flush exterior door handles, and more. Not only that, the P440e should be just as capable off-road as the rest of the family.

Lexus NX450h+

Horsepower: 304 hp

Torque: 332 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: 84 mpg-equivalent / 36 mpg combined

Electric Range: 37 mi / 60 km

Price (USD): $57,705

Price (CAD): $62,095

Reasoning: Despite being one of the earliest adopters of hybrids in the luxury space, it wasn’t until the 2022 model year that Lexus offered a plug-in. The NX450h+ is a smooth and powerful compact SUV, one that prioritizes comfort and fuel efficiency.

SEE ALSO: 2022 Lexus NX 450h+ First Drive Review: Plugged-In Progress

To that point, this is one of the more efficient models on this list, the EPA giving it a stellar 84 mpg-equivalent rating. We appreciate the longer EV-only range, too—the added advantage being less time hearing the thrashy 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine blare via the CVT. The NX also debuted Lexus’ stellar new infotainment system, which has leapfrogged from the back of the pack to being one of our favourite setups out there. It’s important to note that there’s also a more affordable NX350h if you’d rather skip the plug.

Lexus RX500h F Sport Performance

Horsepower: 366 hp

Torque: 406 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: 27 mpg combined

Electric Range: N/A

Price (USD): $62,750

Price (CAD): $81,945

Reasoning: Admit it, “sporty” and “Lexus RX” don’t go together naturally in your head. It’s okay, we were the same too. Then we drove the 2023 RX500h F Sport Performance.

SEE ALSO: 2023 Lexus RX First Drive Review: Best-Seller Gets Better

While the vanilla RX lineup matches its little brother NX for the 350h and 450h+ trims, the 500h FSP is a new range-topper. This funky number eschews high-mpg for high-performance, pairing Lexus’ torquey 2.4-liter turbo-four with an integrated Power Control Unit and electric motor. A separate 80-kW “eAxle” sends power to the rear wheels. Lexus’ Direct4 all-wheel drive system shuffles the power around as it’s needed, and there’s even four-wheel steering to keep the RX agile. The result is a mature, luxury five-seater that can still produce a smile when the time’s right. It’s a different sort of RX, and it’s one we can support, taking a spot on our luxury hybrid SUV top 10 list.

Volvo XC90 Recharge

Horsepower: 455 hp

Torque: 523 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: 66 mpg-equivalent / 26 mpg combined

Electric Range: 36 mi / 58 km

Price (CAD): $72,995

Price (USD): $92,015

Reasoning: Even though its all-electric EX90 successor is right on the horizon, we remain big fans of the Volvo XC90. The design has aged gracefully, all Scandinavian cool in a way the Germans and Brits can’t hope to match. The cabin is calming, with smart materials and an oh-so-soothing color scheme. Did we mention the XC90 has some of the most comfortable seats out there?

SEE ALSO: 2022 Volvo XC90 T8 Recharge Review: Healthy Smoothie

Volvo proved ahead of the curve when it debuted the all-four-cylinder engine lineup for this generation of XC90. The T8 Recharge saw an upgrade in 2022, with a larger 18.8-kWh battery pack nearly doubling the EV range to 36 miles (58 km). An outdated infotainment system is about our only complaint here. If you’re over every single vehicle being “sporty,” even the three-row SUVs, then the XC90 is mighty appealing. Want something smaller? Volvo will sell you the same drivetrain in the XC60, which is one heck of a sleeper.

Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid

Horsepower: 455 hp

Torque: 516 lb-ft

Fuel Economy: 46 mpg-equivalent / 21 mpg

Electric Range: 17 mi / 27 km

Price (USD): $87,950

Price (CAD): $100,950

Reasoning: The Porsche Cayenne has a rather unique distinction in this group. Of all 10 luxury hybrid SUV choices on this list, only Porsche’s original SUV comes with both a standard and “coupe” body style. It’s also the only one to offer two very different performance levels of plug-in hybrid, but we’re focusing on the regular E-Hybrid and skipping the pricier Turbo S E-Hybrid.

SEE ALSO: 2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe Review: Less is More

Unless you need the bragging rights of that top model (or crave the V8 thunder of the GTS), the E-Hybrid might just be the sweet spot of the range. Its 455 horsepower eclipses that of a 911 Carrera S, yet it will carry five in comfort and return an average of 21 mpg. The electric range is a puny 17 miles (27 km), but the flip side there is it doesn’t take too long to charge that 14.3-kWh battery pack. Perhaps best of all, the Cayenne really is the Porsche of SUVs; it’s athletic and engaging when few others this size are. Yes, it’s pricey—especially since finding an unoptioned one is bordering on impossible—but the E-Hybrid is a relative deal in the overall Cayenne family.

2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Shows Off New Infotainment, Tweaked Face

0
0

The middle-child of the Range Rover sub-brand sees smart updates for 2024, focusing on user experience.

Land Rover on Wednesday debuted the 2024 Range Rover Velar on that most 2023 platform: TikTok. The mid-sized model comes in for a light refresh, with tweaked styling inside and out, and an overhauled infotainment setup.

The exterior changes are subtle. A new grille insert uses a different pattern than before, and the small squares in the headlight daytime running lights (DRLs) are now thick lines. Similar changes are apparent out back, with a simpler LED signature and a tweaked rear bumper that now better integrates the fake exhaust outlets.

Interior changes are more dramatic. Gone is the twin-screen setup that dominated the center of the cabin: in its place is one 11.4-inch curved touchscreen running Pivi Pro. That means no more physical controls for climate, though Land Rover is quick to point out they are always visible on-screen. Wireless smart phone mirroring is now standard too, along with Amazon Alexa and what3words. Finally, most of the Velar’s ECUs are capable of over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Land Rover has introduced a range of alternative textiles to the usual leather here. One such option pairs wool with Ultrafabrics polyurethane. The British company touts the hardiness of the Ultrafabrics textile, stating it went through the equivalent of 10 years of stress testing. There are three new color schemes for the leather if folks prefer something more traditional, too.

Other interior tech goodies include an air purification system, 30-color ambient lighting, four-zone climate control, and active noise cancellation. An available 17-speaker Meridian sound system provides up to 750 watts of audio power.

Speaking of power, the Velar will continue to offer two engines, both hooked up to standard AWD and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-liter turbo-four produces 247 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Stepping up to the P400 adds two cylinders and a mild hybrid system, for 395 hp and 405 lb-ft. The latter engine comes with an adaptive suspension, while all Velars still come with Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2.0 driver mode system.

American pricing will begin at $61,500 before destination for the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar P250 S. The Dynamic SE trim requires an additional $2,100; opting for the six-cylinder bumps the price of admission to $70,600. The top trim is the P400 Dynamic SE at $78,400 before options.

Nine Things to Know About the 2018 Range Rover Velar – THE SHORT LIST

0
0

[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com]

Velar is the fourth member of the Range Rover family. Size-wise, it slots in between the smaller Evoke and larger Sport model.

With multiple powertrain options, a swanky interior and TONS of tech, there’s plenty to talk about, but here are nine of the most important things to know about this midsize luxury crossover.

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

9. It’s Stunningly Beautiful

And right out of the gate, the very first thing you’ll ever notice about this utility vehicle is that it’s simply gorgeous, and from just about every angle. Clean, elegant, sophisticated, it looks like something from 50 years in the future. And this isn’t just my opinion; thanks to its sleek-and-sexy body, Velar was also honored with the 2018 World Car Design of the Year award.

8. THE DOOR HANDLES ARE SO COOL!!!

Helping enable its impossibly smooth flanks are unique retracting door handles, perhaps this Range Rover’s signature design element. Not only do they look so cool, quietly motoring in when the vehicle is locked, they also help improve aerodynamics, however slightly, by retracting at speeds greater than 5 miles an hour. Undoubtedly, this is a frivolous touch, and one that raises long-term reliability questions, but I still love it!

SEE ALSO: 9 Things to Know About the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback — THE SHORT LIST

7. A High-Tech Interior

As you might expect, the Velar’s cabin is just as breathtaking as what you see outside, dominated by a pair of 10-inch high-definition screens on the dashboard and center console, both of which are home to the InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. These two displays replace myriad physical buttons and switches with a slick digital interface.

Powering all this is an Intel quad-core processor and a high-speed solid-state drive, though none of this cutting-edge tech responds with immediacy; everything seems just a whisker slower than it should be. This is all a bit overwhelming to use, especially at first, but poke around for a little while and you soon learn there’s a method to the apparent madness.

6. It’s Luxurious, Too

Of course, there’s more to the Velar’s interior than just screens, even if our top-of-the-line First Edition test model also features a 12.3-inch reconfigurable digital instrument cluster. Seriously upping the luxury factor, there’s creamy soft leather on practically every surface, though the white cow hides fitted here probably aren’t going to stay that way for very long given the wear and tear of daily life. There are also available 20-way adjustable front bucket seats with heating, cooling and massage functionality. A surfeit of driver-assistance tech including lane-keeping assist, traffic-sign recognition, adaptive cruise control that works in stop-and-go traffic and more enhances safety while reducing fatigue.

5. There are Three Engine Choices

As for mechanicals, American motorists can choose between three different engines in the Velar. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline unit serves base duty and delivers 247 horses. There’s also a diesel of the same displacement and layout with 180 ponies on tap.

But the powerplant you’ll most likely want is the top-level supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that packs a 380-horse kick in the pants. Torque clocks in at 332 pound-feet. No matter the powerplant, a responsive and slick ZF eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. Six-cylinder Velars can accelerate to 60 miles an hour in as little as 5.3 seconds smoothly building speed and providing a hint of blower whine to boot.

4. It Looks Smaller Than You Might Expect

In person, the Velar is smaller than you might expect. For whatever reason it looks HUGE in photos.

With an overall length of about 189 inches it’s a touch shorter than rivals like the Audi Q7, Acura MDX or Mercedes-Benz GLE. Luggage capacity is likewise similar to these competitors, with more than 34 cubic feet (974 liters) of space available behind the second row and around 70 (1,985 liters) with the backrests dropped, which you can’t seem to do from the cargo hold, which is a questionable design decision.

3. It’s Still a Range Rover

Despite its concept-car styling, the Velar can still go just about anywhere thanks to cutting-edge four-wheel-drive technology. Models equipped with the top-level V6 engine feature air-suspension that can raise and lower the body, providing up to 9.9 inches (25 cm) of ground clearance. At max lift, the vehicle can wade through nearly 26 inches (66 cm) of water.

Providing refined ride quality with stable handling, adaptive dampers are standard across the board, monitoring wheel movements 500 times and body movements 100 times per second.

Terrain Response 2 is the top four-wheel-drive system offered. It’s standard on First Edition models and optional on every other. Ensuring you never get mired is a laundry list of features like Intelligent Driveline Dynamics, an Active Locking Rear Differential, All Terrain Progress Control and much more.

2. It’s Not Necessarily as Expensive as it Looks

Even though the top-shelf First Edition model tested here stickers for nearly $92,000, the Velar isn’t necessarily as expensive as it looks. This is because you can get a base version for less than $51,000, a figure that includes $995 for delivery. Since it looks like a million bucks, buying one means you’re instantly going to save more than $949,000. WHAT A VALUE!

1. It’s the Most Popular JLR Model

With looks to kill and a reasonably attainable price tag it should be no surprise Velar is doing well in the marketplace. So far in 2018 it’s the top-selling Land Rover product and is second in the overall JLR portfolio only to Jaguar’s F-Pace utility vehicle, with which it shares a. Not bad for a vehicle that hasn’t even been on the market for an entire year yet.

Straight Six to Replace V8s in Future Jaguar Land Rover Models

0
0

Jaguar Land Rover will eventually phase out V8 engines in favor of high-performance versions of the upcoming Ingenium inline-six engine.

According to Autocar, the new Ingenium straight-six will feature an electrically powered turbocharger, giving it enough power to properly replace the aging 5.0-liter V8 in future Land Rover and Jaguar products. Less powerful versions of the engine will also replace the automaker’s 3.0-liter V6 going forward.

The straight-six engine is apart of a new lineup of Ingenium engines from JLR that will also include a three-cylinder and a four-cylinder. Clean diesels are also included in the new engine lineup, although they are likely for Europe only and probably won’t arrive in North America.

ALSO SEE: Where Is Jaguar Made?

The first vehicle expected to arrive with these new engines is the next-generation Evoque. The crossover will ride on a heavily modified version of the current front-wheel drive based platform called ‘Premium Transverse Architecture’. Autocar alleges the new Evoque will debut in Los Angeles in November before going on sale in the beginning of 2019. The next-generation Discovery Sport will also move to the PTA platform when it’s replaced in 2020 or 2021.

SEE ALSO: 2019 Jaguar I-Pace Review

Eventually, all JLR models will move to a modular aluminum-intensive platform called the ‘Modular Longitudinal Architecture’. The flexible platform will accommodate both rear- and all-wheel drive layouts, along with gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. The first MLA-based model to arrive will be the next-generation Defender – expected to enter production in 2020. Shortly after, the MLA-based Jaguar J-Pace large SUV will debut, followed by the next-generation Range Rover in 2021. The rumored wagon-crossover combo, internally referred to as the ‘Road Rover’ EV, will arrive on MLA sometime after 2022.

Eventually the E-Pace, Evoque and Discovery Sport will move to MLA as well – although this isn’t expected to happen until 2025 or later.

This new product strategy will see JLR replace every single one of its current models with all-new ones by 2024. All told, 99 new model variants will be launched between now and then.

[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com]
The 2019 Range Rover has been detailed by the British automaker this week.

Among the most prominent changes made to the Range Rover for 2019 is the addition of the P400e HSE model to the lineup. The P400e uses the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 85 kW electric motor as the Range Rover Sport P400e and boasts an output of 398 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. With a 13.1kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the SUV can travel up to 31 miles using electric power only. Land Rover claims it will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds and top out at 137 mph.

Also new on the 2019 Range Rover is a ‘Wade Sensing’ system that provides the driver with real-time wading depth information in relation to the vehicle’s maximum wading capacity. The SUV gets an expanded suite of driver assistance technology as well including an available Active Cruise Control system with Steering Assist. The system is apart of the new Driver Assist Pack, which includes everything in the available Drive Pro and Park Pro packs too, such as High Speed Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keep Assist, a 360-degree Parking Aid, Rear Traffic Monitor and Clear Exit Monitor.

SEE ALSO: Nine Things to Know About the 2018 Range Rover Velar – THE SHORT LIST

Apart from these minor changes, the 2019 Range Rover is otherwise identical to the 2018 model year version. Prices for the base-level SE model with the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 will start at $88,860 – a slight increase over the 2018 model year’s entry-level price of $88,345. The new HSE P400e is priced from $95,150. A full pricing chart including all available 2019 Range Rover models is also embedded below.

A unique Land Rover Discovery has entered active service with the Austrian Red Cross disaster response team.

The custom Land Rover Discovery is developed from the original Project Hero concept car and serves as a new emergency mobile command center, helping disaster response teams to save lives. It also provides eyes in the sky with a special drone, while go-anywhere wheels gives it versatility on the ground. The project was the result of an 18-month collaboration between Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations and the Austrian Red Cross and it will operate as a mobile nerve center for disaster emergencies.

On board the vehicle is an advanced eight-rotor drone, featuring a long-range thermal imaging camera that is capable of spotting a person from over 1,440 feet (440 meters) and can identify a vehicle at almost 3,280 feet (1,000 meters).

Other bespoke features on the Discovery include four radio antennas, 360-degree lighting, and a unique integrated carbon fiber loadspace Command Center so that Red Cross personnel can coordinate emergency responses.

“Our partnership with the Red Cross isn’t just about our vehicles,” said Michael Van Der Sande, managing director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations. “Since we started collaborating in 1954, our aim has been to help the Red Cross improve its disaster response and ultimately to help save lives. Over the past 18 months our engineers have worked closely with the emergency response team at the Austrian Red Cross, deploying Land Rover’s technology and talent to create a unique solution to the requirements of the Red Cross in the region.”

All-New Range Rover Evoque Debuts Looking Like a Little Velar

0
0

The style-first Range Rover Evoque surprised when it arrived in 2011. Startlingly close to the LRX concept that preceded it, the three and five-door crossover’s sharp lines and small size helped carve a new segment into the crowded crossover class. Now it’s time for an all-new model. With more style, more tech, and more sustainable materials.

Land Rover has revealed the new Range Rover Evoque in London, broadcast on the automaker’s social media channels. While it’s not quite world’s largest Lego stage built for the Discovery, Range Rover was quick to show off the car’s off-road prowess, driving it almost immediately over ramps that put a wheel in the air and then through a deep water ford.

The new Evoque isn’t a massive change stylistically from the current model. The basic shape is similar, though with a more Velar-like nose and new flush-mount door handles. The sides and corners are sleeker than before, much like the latest Discovery.

ALSO SEE: How the Land Rover Discovery Helped Me Get Engaged

Inside, the new Evoque uses new materials that are an alternative to traditional leather. Kvadrat wool and Dinamica suede, and even a Eucalyptus textile and Ultrafabrics that use recycled plastics and natural materials. Every new Evoque will contain up to 72.8 lbs (33 kg) of natural and recycled material.

At 172.1 inches long and 75 inches wide, it’s nearly identical in exterior dimensions to the old one. But Land Rover says the new platform means 0.8 inches more legroom, six percent more luggage space, and a generally larger interior.

Two powertrains will be available at launch. Both use a 2.0L turbo four, but one adds a 48-volt mild hybrid system to the Evoque. The base engine produces 246 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. The mild hybrid harvests energy under coasting and deceleration, plus it allows more use of start-stop engine shut off, and at speeds up to 11 mph. And it makes 296 hp and 296 lb-ft. Both powertrains get four-wheel drive and use a nine-speed automatic.

New technology features include a ClearSight Ground View camera that uses front-facing cameras and the infotainment screen to let you virtually see through the hood to the ground directly in front of the vehicle. Useful in the bush and useful when parking in town. It also offers a rear-view camera mirror that projects a rear-facing camera into the central rear-view mirror. The camera and screen combo gives the driver a wider field of view and can let them see around cargo and passengers. It’s also designed for better low-light performance.

There are rear-seat tablet holders with charge ports for rear passengers, and up front, Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system will be on the options list. That combines a pair of 10.0-inch screens with a 12.3-inch digital dash and a full-color head-up display.

More details about the 2020 Range Rover Evoque, including pricing and timing, will come at the Chicago Auto Show in February.

The New Land Rover Defender Is Coming Very, Very Soon

Land Rover has sent an official teaser for the upcoming 2020 Defender.

The new Land Rover Defender is one of the most highly anticipated vehicles of the New Year. The SUV will be offered in both four-door long wheelbase and two-door short wheelbase form and, as you can tell from the teaser image, will feature squarish styling heavily inspired by the outgoing model. The teaser also reveals the SUV will be offered with a tailgate mounted spare tire.

SEE ALSO: A Land Rover Defender Pickup Truck Could Arrive by 2020

Land Rover intends to debut the next-generation Defender next year, with the first customer deliveries expected to commence in 2020. Four-cylinder diesel and four-cylinder gasoline engines should both be on offer, depending on the market in question. An electrified version should arrive eventually as well, but may not be offered from launch.

Like all Land Rovers, the new Defender will aim for segment-leading off-road capability. Expect plenty of ground clearance and an evolved version of the manufacturer’s Terrain Response traction management system. Land Rover will also put the vehicle through a stringent pre-production testing regime that will expose it to all sorts of brutal conditions, from frigid Sweden to the scorching American desert.

Look for the new Land Rover Defender to make its debut in 2019, likely at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, before sales begin the following year.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender will be sold in the United States and Canada, the British automaker has announced.

The next-generation Defender, which will debut in 2019 before going on sale in the US and Canada in early 2020, is said to have “broader public appeal,” than the utilitarian first-generation Defender. The automaker says it will have “an all-new exterior and interior design, as well as a suite of the latest driver assistance and connectivity features available.”

“When it debuts in 2019, the new model will represent 70 years of innovation and improvement in just one model year; honoring the model’s history for rugged durability, while thoroughly remaining a Defender for the 21st century,” Land Rover added.

SEE ALSO: 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar First Drive Review

Photos of Defender prototypes show both two- and four-door models with a tall, boxy silhouette.
North American models will likely be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine and will aim for segment-leading off-road capability.

Land Rover is currently putting the 2020 Defender through a brutal pre-production testing regime that will expose it to all sorts of brutal conditions, from frigid Sweden to the scorching American desert. It says the tests will help “to make sure the new Defender is the most off-road capable Land Rover vehicle ever.”

Full details on the 2020 Defender will become available following its debut next year, so stay tuned as more information on the SUV comes to light.

Top 10 Cars We’re Excited About in 2019

0
0

We’re setting our sights on a whole new year of automotive excellence. We can’t wait to see what new cars debut in 2019, but there are a few that have already caught our eye. We can’t wait to drive these new cars or see them fully revealed. Here’s what we’re looking forward to:

Kia Soul

Making its debut at the 2018 L.A. Auto Show, the Kia Soul is an interesting little car that manages to fulfill a number of consumer demands. It’s spacious yet fuel efficient. It’s affordable and attractive. It’s quirky and cool. It’s hard not to like the Soul and we bet that it’ll be even better to drive than it was in past generations. There will also be a Soul EV, which basically bundles the Kona EVs powertrain with a cool new look.

See Also: 2020 Kia Soul and Soul EV Debut

Lincoln Aviator

When was the last time anyone said they were looking forward to a Lincoln? Then again, when was the last time Lincoln brought out a vehicle with 600 lb-ft of torque? The Aviator is also extremely attractive, taking the interior and exterior design language from the well-received Lincoln Navigator and applying it to a smaller canvas. Yes, the Aviator will be a bit smaller, but it comes with a ton of equipment. A plug-in hybrid version will be coming, but there’s also an air suspension that can scan the road ahead and pre-adjust the suspension to smooth out the ride as much as possible. Sounds like and looks like a winner all around.

See Also: 2020 Lincoln Aviator Debuts with 600 lb-ft, Turbo PHEV Powertrain

Land Rover Defender

A Land Rover Defender is on the way to North America, finally. It seems like we’re getting ready for a new work-horse that is sure to be a hit — people seem to love boxy off-road-ready SUVs. If the Wrangler doesn’t do it for you and you have no faith in the upcoming Ford Bronco, the Defender is probably what you’re waiting for.

Jeep Gladiator

2020 Jeep Gladiator

It’s a Jeep Wrangler with more utility! What more could you ask for?!

See Also: Everything you need to know about the Jeep Gladiator

Polestar 1

This is an exclusive sports car from Volvo spin-off brand Polestar. The body is made from carbon fiber, which is wild, but the automaker pairs that lightweight tech with some high-speed tech. Using a plug-in hybrid powertrain, it features 600 horsepower and 730 lb-ft of torque and can travel about 90 miles on a single charge. With a production run of just 500 cars a year, it’ll be interesting to see how many people pick up the tab on this $155,000.

See Also: Polestar 1 costs more than BMW i8, Acura NSX

Porsche Taycan

But if we’re going to bring up any electrified vehicle, it’ll be hard to ignore the upcoming Porsche Taycan. In fact, the brand has recently boosted production due to the high demand. The brand’s Tesla Model S competitor will feature 600 horsepower from its two electric motors, which allows it to hit highways speeds in just 3.5 seconds. The automaker is also looking to introduce a fast-charging system: it uses an 800V system that will provide 250 miles of range in just 15 minutes. Maximum range is 310 miles, and the brand is hoping to feature a price that starts in the low $90,000 range. This will be an interesting year for EVs thanks to the introduction of the Taycan.

See Also: 2020 Porsche Taycan: 600 hp and 310 Miles of Range

Mercedes-AMG One

mercedes-amg project one

There are going to be a few Formula One-inspired vehicles arriving next year, and while there are no chances we’ll actually get to drive one, it’s still extremely exciting to see these ultra-high-performance cars get made. One of the most highly anticipated examples is the Mercedes-AMG One, which will utilize a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 and a hybrid powertrain that makes over 1,000 horsepower. The vehicle also weighs less than 2,900 lbs and will feature a top speed in excess of 220 mph. Simply put, this is going to be crazy.

Chevrolet Corvette C8

Are the rumors real? Are we getting a mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette? It seems that way based on the spy photos and the slow tease of information. It seems like the automaker is set on making a supercar to deflate the Ford GT, and this Corvette might be it. We were supposed to see it this January, but apparently, some last-minute issues are causing the debut to be delayed. Time will tell if this is still just a pipe dream or if we’ll actually get the new ‘vette or not.

Ford Bronco

People can’t wait to see Ford’s Jeep Wrangler fighter, and we’re expecting a very rugged-looking truck that will look to take a chunk out of the Jeep’s success and market share. We expect it to feature a boxy look, a removable roof, and solid front and rear axles. While we likely won’t drive the vehicle in 2019, we should get a full reveal and more specs soon.

Toyota Supra

Who hasn’t been waiting to see the Supra completely uncovered? The new Toyota sports car is coming and everyone is annoyed or excited about it. Enthusiasts are divided because all the hardware in the new Supra is actually from BMW. The turbocharged straight-six is from the German automaker, and many are worried that the typically rock-solid reliability expected from Toyota will be lost. Time will tell, but at least we can let you sleep soundly with the promise that this is a fun-to-drive sports car. We drove an early version back in 2018 and it didn’t disappoint thanks to its excellent power delivery and tons of grip.

You Can Now Get the Range Rover Velar With a Massive 542 HP V8

[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com]
Land Rover has debuted the new Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition – a mid-size crossover that is as powerful as its name is long.

Under the hood of the Velar Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is Jaguar Land Rover’s 5.0-liter supercharged V8, which is good for 542 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, this forced induction eight-cylinder will help the Velar hustle from 0-60 mph in a sports car-baiting 4.5s and reach a top speed of 170 mph. Land Rover also claims it will accelerate from 50-75 mph in just 2.6s.

You can’t just drop a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 in a crossover and call it a day, so the Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition also gets lightweight 20-inch wheels that make room for massive 15.5-inch brake rotors. Grabbing the rotors are strong four-piston calipers in the front and a single piston caliper in the rear. Land Rover also tuned the rear differential, eight-speed transmission, steering rack and air suspension system to deliver a sportier driving experience.

SEE ALSO: 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar First Drive Review

All V8 Velars will also get a new front bumper with large air intake pods, a different grille, a black contrasting roof and a revised rear bumper with quad exhaust tips. The automaker says the Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is also the only Velar available in ‘Satin Byron Blue’. Six other colors are also available: Firenze Red, Santorini Black, Corris Grey, Fuji White and Indus Silver.

Interior upholstery options include Ebony, Cirrus, Vintage Tan and Pimento leather, while carbon fiber interior trim is available as an option. A sport steering wheel with paddle shifters and heated and cooled sports seats are also standard.

The Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition will start at £86,120 in the UK, or roughly $111,600 USD. Range Rover has not said if the vehicle will be available in the United States or Canada.

Top 10 Most Expensive SUVs

0
0

This post was updated for 2019.

Crossovers and SUVs are hugely popular these days.

It’s why automakers keep introducing more and more of them every year, with some companies vacating the traditional car market altogether.

Versatility is a major reason why these machines are selling so well in America, and really, around the world. Utility vehicles typically have far more cargo space than comparably sized sedans. But another benefit is their elevated seating positions, which provide drivers with a bird’s eye view of their surroundings. And if that’s not enough, there’s a huge span of different models available. Truly, there’s something for every driver’s budget and taste, from the diminutive Honda HR-V to Chevrolet’s colossal Suburban.

2019 Range Rover Sport Available with New Hybrid Inline Six Engine

0

The 2019 Range Rover Sport will be offered with two different versions of the automaker’s innovative new 3.0-liter mild hybrid inline-six engine.

JLR’s new mild-hybrid inline-six, which it first detailed early last month, will be offered in 355 hp and 395 hp flavors in the 2019 Range Rover Sport. The 355 hp version of the engine will power the entry-level P360 and mid-tier HSE P360 trims, while the 395 hp version will only be found in the range-topping HST P400.

The British brand says the 395 hp version of the 3.0-liter engine, which also has a meaty 406 lb-ft of torque on tap, can propel the SUV from 0-60 mph in around 5.9s and onward to a top speed of 140 mph.

Prices for the 2019 Range Rover Sport will start at $68,500 in the United States for the P360, with the 395 hp HST P400 model starting at $82,950.

The 3.0-liter inline-six engine features an electrically driven supercharger along with a twin-scroll turbocharger. The combustion engine is paired with a 48v battery that harvests energy through regenerative braking that can be used when accelerating from a stop, for example, or to operate the start-stop system.

Land Rover says the powertrain delivers “smooth acceleration and enhanced performance,” over its outgoing V6 engines. It didn’t mention if it expects fuel economy figures for the 2019 Range Rover Sport to improve over outgoing models, though it seems likely.

The 2019 Range Rover Sport will arrive in US dealers later this year.

Top 10 Best Diesel Cars You Can Buy in the US The Short List

It’s a real shame you can’t buy a new diesel-powered Volkswagen in the U.S. anymore.

Following the automaker’s big emissions brouhaha, they don’t offer any, even though they’ve been a huge proponent of the technology for decades. Luckily though, this scandal didn’t ruin compression ignition for everyone.

For enhanced fuel efficiency, greater driving range and, of course, copious low-end torque, it’s hard to beat a diesel. The only problem is the fuel is a bit pricier than gasoline and they require much more after-treatment hardware, which, of course, is expensive.

SEE ALSO: Buy THIS ENGINE in a Jeep Wrangler – VIDEO

While harder to find, you can still buy a variety of new diesel-powered vehicles in America today and here are a few worthwhile offerings.

10. 2019 Chevrolet Cruze

And we start with the Chevrolet Cruze. Even though production officially ceased on March 6, with GM’s Lordstown, Ohio, manufacturing plant being idled, you should still be able to buy one of these compact cars with an oil-burning engine. More specifically, a 1.6-liter dynamo that features a variable-nozzle turbocharger. Rated at 137 horsepower and a beastly 240 pound-feet of torque, it should provide plenty of scoot. For 2019, a six-speed manual transmission is no longer offered with this engine, so you’ll just have to make do with the standard nine-ratio auto-box. At least you can choose between hatchback and sedan bodies.

9. 2019 Chevrolet Equinox

But most drivers these days are completely disinterested in small cars, a real pity. Crossovers are the only vehicles people seem to want anymore. But good news, you don’t even have to leave the Chevrolet store to get a car-based utility with a diesel engine.

They’ll happily sell you an Equinox with the same engine as in the Cruze – one with identical bore, stroke and output figures. Matched to a six-speed automatic transmission, it’s impressively economical, especially in front-wheel-drive form. Expect up to 32 MPG combined.

8. 2019 GMC Terrain

Of course, if you want a professional-grade Equinox, you could always grab a GMC Terrain. Yes, it too is available with that same silky-smooth 1.6-liter diesel. Base price with that engine is about $33,000 including delivery.

7. 2019 Jaguar XE

But back to cars. The Jaguar XE is a pleasant luxury sedan with tasteful design and plenty powertrain options. In the U.S., you can get several flavors of a turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder, a supercharged V6 or even – GASP – a small diesel! The compression-ignition offering displaces 2.0-liters and is rated at a rather middling 180 horsepower, however, torque clocks in at a crushing 318 pound-feet! That’s enough kibbles and bits to get this car to 60 miles an hour in a claimed 7.4 seconds.

6. 2019 Jaguar XF

And guess what? You can get that same smooth-running Jaguar Ingenium diesel in the larger XF sedan if you fancy having a bit more car. Unfortunately, though, that engine is not available in the versatile and oh-so-sexy Sportbrake station wagon. They’re only offered with a 380-horsepower supercharged gasoline V6. Such a privation!

5. 2019 Jaguar F-Pace

Now, if you still want to stay in the Jaguar Land Rover family, an oil-burning heart is also available in the F-Pace and Velar utility vehicles. These closely related crossovers are both graced with 180 horses provided by 2.0-liters of displacement spread across four cylinders. Sounds pretty familiar, eh? If the Jaguar floats your boat, plan on shelling out about $50,000 for a base F-Pace with this engine.

4. 2019 Range Rover Velar

Nine Things to Know About the 2018 Range Rover Velar –

Of course, if you’d rather own the Range Rover Velar instead of the abovementioned Jag, tack about $7,200 more on to that price tag for an entry-level example. Arguably, this model is even more handsome than its big-cat stablemate.

But how ‘bout a few trucks to round out this list? What American doesn’t love a pickup?! If they say they don’t, they’re probably lying to you!

And we start with the Chevy Colorado. In LT trim, it can be fitted with a sprightly 2.8-liter Duramax oil-burning four-cylinder engine that’s good for 181 horses and 369 pound-feet of torque.

2. 2019 GMC Canyon SLE

Of course, you could also get this engine in an SLE-trim GMC Canyon. Either way that diesel engine should return up to 30 mpg highway with rear-wheel drive. Base price for the Chevy is about $37,000 but plan on spending around $1,000 more for the GMC.

1. 2019 Ford F-150

Rounding things out is the ever-popular Ford F-150. This full-size truck can be had with a refined 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel V6, one that delivers 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of twist. Aside from those figures, Ford is also keen to crow about its impressive 30-mpg highway rating, a number it should deliver when properly equipped, of course, a version I’d bet few people actually buy. Still, that’s a mighty impressive figure for a big, honkin’ pickup.

Who Makes Land Rover and Where is Land Rover Made?

Land Rover is popular all over the world for its extremely capable and well-made SUVs, but you may not know where the brand originates, who makes Land Rover, or where it builds its crossovers and SUVs today.

SEE ALSO: Where Is Jaguar Made?

In this post, we’ll provide a brief overview of Land Rover’s (admittedly complicated) history, where it was first incorporated and where its various plants are located today. This post will focus on the Land Rover plants that serve the North American market, as it operates many plants that serve foreign markets only, such as its plant in China.

Who Makes Land Rover? Where is Land Rover From?

who makes land rover

Land Rover was originally a sub-brand of British marque Rover Company, with its first vehicle being the Series I Land Rover Defender, which launched in 1948. The Series I was one of the first mass-produced four-wheel drive vehicles and was likely inspired by the original Willys Jeep.

In late 1967, the British government pressured Rover Company to join forces with the Leyland Motor Corporation, otherwise known as British Leyland. In 1978, BL rolled Land Rover into an entirely separate company. It then became part of the Rover Group after BL went under 1988, with Rover Group later being sold to BMW in 1994. In 2000, BMW sold Land Rover to Ford, which then sold the SUV brand to Indian firm Tata Motors in 2008. Tata has owned the company ever since, operating it under the Jaguar-Land Rover banner. Although it’s owned by an Indian company, Land Rover’s global headquarters are located in Coventry, United Kingdom.

2020 Land Rover Defender Delivers Retro Style, Modern Tech

0
0

The Land Rover Defender is back and more appealing than ever.

One of the brand’s most iconic models, the Defender has developed a cult following with it’s boxy style and general un-obtainability. That’s due to the fact that the SUV hasn’t been offered on North American soil since 1997.

The 2020 LandRover Defender has been redesigned from the ground up, giving the legendary nameplate a fresh look for the 21st century – though still with plenty of retro style. An all-new platform provides the foundation for an off-road SUV that should be as tough as it looks. Two models will eventually be available, simply dubbed the 110 and 90, which translate to an extended and short-wheelbase version.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender doesn’t shy away from the heavy work, either, and posts some impressive top numbers. With the right equipment, Land Rover claims the 2020 Defender can support a maximum payload of 1984 pounds (900 kg). With a towing capacity of up to 7,200 pounds (3,720 kg), the 2020 Defender is no slouch. It has a static roof load of up to 660 pounds (300 kg) or a dynamic roof load up to 370 pounds (168 kg). LandRover has injected a can-do spirit into the 2020 Defender, giving it just over 35-inches (900 mm) of wading depth.

You can get up to seven passengers into the long-wheelbase 110 2020 Land Rover Defender. Seating is arranged 5+2, with 37.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. The shorter 2020 Defender 90 will seat up to six. LandRover designed the D7x architecture for the Defender, testing the aluminum monocoque construction over 62,000 times.

To say the 2020 Defender looks striking is an understatement, and Land Rover offers four different themed accessories packs to customize your 2020 Defender even further.  You can choose from Adventure, Country, Explorer, and Urban.

The Explorer Pack adds overlanding accessories like a raised air intake, a roof rack and gear carriers that attached to the site of the vehicle. A roof ladder is available as an add-on.

For more extreme destinations is the Adventure Pack complete with a 6.5-liter water reservoir with a hose and shower attachment, plus an air compressor, and those side-mounted carriers.

The 2020 Defender 110 will be available in the X, and First Edition trims, while the 2020 Defender 90 breaks down into S, SE, and HSE trims.

The 2020 LandRover Defender will be available with a pair of gas and diesel engines. Both gas engines are from Land Rover’s family of mild-hybrid systems. The P300 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system making 296 horsepower. A P400 six-cylinder mild-hybrid system is also available. Both the D200 and D240 four-cylinder turbodiesel engines are available for the 2020 LandRover Defender. Land Rover plans to release a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), sometime shortly.

Base MSRP is $49,900 before destination charges for the 5-door 90 model and it will hit dealers next Spring. Pricing on the 3-door version is expected soon.

Top 10 Most Beautiful Cars of 2019

2019 Lexus LC500

These 2019s are some of our favorite-looking machines.

There’s no right, wrong, worst, or best way to define beauty—and in most cases, we know something is beautiful by the way it catches our eye, draws our stares, or persuades us to look more closely.

When it comes to attracting attention, gratifying closer examination, and stirring the sense of sight, we figure the following list of machinery are among the very best, at least on this side of Powerball money.

bmw m4 cs

Model: BMW M4

Why: With its menacing stance and confident face, the BMW M4 is a popular performance car for a variety of reasons—and styling is high on the list. The M4 is nothing other than a BMW from a mere glance, and the flowing lines and smooth silhouette punch up the two-door flair.

Upgraded styling elements reflect the high-performance intentions of this machine, without excessive flashiness. The M4 looks as at home in the office parking lot as it does at the race-track, and new drivers can expect plenty of approving nods.

Don’t Miss: The signature M4 styling touches. These include a subtle power bulge in the hood, enlarged fascia vents, larger wheels and brakes, and quad exhaust at the rear. The colorful BMW ‘M’ badge is applied throughout.

2018 lexus lc 500

Model: Lexus LC

Why: Few cars for the money are as immediately striking, and unapologetically beautiful, as the Lexus LC. Concept-level sculpting and lighting elements combine with a welded-to-the-road stance, resulting in a demanding presence on the road.

Lighter paint colors draw more detail and contrast from the bodywork, for added flair. At once classy, elegant and athletic, we figure the LC will go down in the history books as one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Truly, this one’s a rolling piece of artwork, as much as a world-class luxury coupe.

Don’t Miss: The interior. Combining famous Lexus build quality with a style that’s just as distinctive as the body, the LC’s cabin will wow drivers (and lucky passengers) for years to come.

Model: Genesis G90

Why: The Genesis G90 is built to challenge far pricier flagship sedans from automakers around the globe, and the look of Korea’s foremost luxury car is a fresh and daring new face, in a sea of familiar shapes.

You won’t miss this one coming down the road: regal lines and the G90’s generous size convey a luxury-first look, and the designers specified no shortage of unique details and elements to draw the eyes closer.

You’ll first spot the grille, or the wheels. Both share a highly decorative mesh patterning, and immediately position the G90 as something exclusive and high-end. Metal accenting is tastefully restrained, dialing up the look without being shouty, and the careful arrangements of LED lighting elements draws out a distinctive after-dark visage.

Don’t Miss: That backside. It’s as modern and sleek as it gets, with LED lighting and chrome accenting flowing like liquid. Best? It proudly flaunts the word ‘GENESIS’ across the tail, declaring its identity via enlarged text, not a tiny badge.

Model: Infiniti Q60

Why: The Q60 is Infiniti’s most strikingly-styled production car to date, and a two-door coupe that intends to give shoppers relatively affordable access to a stirring look, and striking body. A two-door take on the Infiniti Q50 sedan, the Q60 Coupe offers shoppers comfort and performance that they can customize and control, all wrapped in a stellar-looking body.

Incorporating numerous modern design elements and Infiniti signature touches, the Q60 coupe is graceful, distinctive, and easy to spot. Details abound, including the extensive use of LED accent lighting, an integrated trunk-lid spoiler, and a uniquely-shaped window surround that helps accent the Q60’s curvaceous body.

To the cohesive looks, designers specified a poised stance and plenty of premium touches, making it hard to find a bad angle.

Don’t Miss: The side profile. The Q60’s silhouette looks athletic and high-end, and comes adorned with plenty of flowing sculpts that help catch and enhance reflections. Subtle touches, including the flat rear fascia, integrated rear spoiler, and deeply curvaceous character lines, add further rewards for your close inspection.

Model: Land Rover Range Rover

Why: Boasting a modern take on timeless proportions and style, the Land Rover Range Rover is one of the most beautifully-styled SUVs on the road. To its imposing size and generous proportions, designers specified nearly playful use of accenting and ornamentation, flush-mounted LED lighting, and a grille that’s distinctive without screaming for attention.

The roof is tall and long, and it visually terminates in a subtle rear roof spoiler that helps create a wind-swept look. A prominent aluminum-look slash runs down the side and bottom of the vehicle, creating additional poise and tension while tying the whole body together. Big wheels, large dual exhausts and a clean and modern design help drive further appeal for the shopper after a high-style SUV that doesn’t easily blend in.

Don’t Miss: The cabin. Ensuring that the show goes on even once occupants are buckled and boarded, the Range Rover’s interior is sopping with richness, thanks to the abundant use of high-end materials like wood, metal, and creamy leather that’s so fragrant, it leaves its scent on your clothing for hours. Like the body, Range Rover’s interior is clean, upscale, tidy, and unquestionably posh.

Model: Alfa Romeo Giulia

Why: This compact executive sedan uses no shortage of passion in its design, and the result is a body that exudes a powerful presence on the road, and stands out wherever it goes. A boldly-sculpted hood flows seamlessly into the Giulia’s one-of-a-kind fascia, which identifies the car as nothing other than an Alfa Romeo, even at a distance.

Elsewhere, the body lets its shape do the talking: Giulia has a distinctively athletic and youthful look that puts the focus on the curves and lines, not the add-ons. The look is clean and premium, not flashy. We love the sporty dimensions that help make the Giulia look even smaller and spritelier, and the one-of-a-kind grille and wheels add further exclusivity. At the rear, prominent dual exhaust outlets hint at the Giulia’s performance capabilities.

Don’t Miss: The Quadrifolgio. This high-performing Giulia variant adds visual enhancements that communicate additional alertness and capability. Look for enlarged air openings and exhausts, special badging, and unique cosmetic tweaks that turn the dial to ‘11’ on the Giulia’s spirited and stylish looks.

2018-audi-s5-cabriolet-and-audi-a5-cabriolet-34

Model: Audi A5

Why: The A5 might be Audi’s entry-level coupe, but the looks are anything but bottom of the line. With full deployment of Audi’s considerable design resources, the A5 Coupe’s body cleanly integrates dynamic sculpting, a graceful silhouette, and luxurious proportions. In typical Audi fashion, the after-dark lighting signature is a knockout, with plenty of vivid and animated LED accent lighting giving the A5’s identity away as it rolls along.

A dramatic and deep-cut belt-line helps tie the entire body together—running front to rear along each side of the A5, and picking up subtle curves in the body work along the way. For the money, this one’s hard to beat as either a driving machine, or a styling statement.

Don’t Miss: The selection. The A5 is offered in three body styles, and with three unique performance levels—each of which flaunts its own take on the A5’s signature looks.

Model: Hyundai Sonata

Why: In a shrinking sea of family sedans, the new Sonata fully embraces the latest and greatest from Hyundai’s design department. From just a quick look, the Sonata is something different—and that’s exactly the point. Dynamic and prominent, both front and rear fascias proudly display Hyundai’s identity, with prominent badging and a large ‘HYUNDAI’ text across the trunk where most other family sedans keep a tiny little badge, instead. That’s flanked by a set of LED taillights that wouldn’t look out of place in a big-dollar luxury sedan.

The daring metal belt-line adds further distinction, and strong vertical elements in the front grille exaggerate the visual width of the car, for a more substantial look. A big greenhouse hints at the spacious interior within, and the stance and silhouette give the Sonata a look that seems big on space, but free of bloat. Other subtle touches are applied to reward further inspection, too.

Few affordable sedans boast so many styling elements that work so well with one another.

Don’t Miss: The high-end add-ons. Sonata’s top-grade models come with additional styling touches including up-sized wheels, dual exhaust, a rear bumper splitter assembly, and a generous panoramic sunroof.

2018 Lincoln Navigator-2

Model: Lincoln Navigator

Why: Despite its nearly intimidating size, the Lincoln Navigator is a gentle-looking behemoth. The automaker’s largest SUV model offers shoppers an authentically luxurious and super-modern cabin, but the fun starts before you get on board.

Smooth and splendid, Navigator’s immense body features plenty of rounded edges and soft lines that help convey a relaxed and comfortable presence on the road. The prominent grille impresses first for its size, and second, for the finer details built into its mesh-finished visage.

From behind, Navigator is nothing but enormous—though the massive LED taillamp array is as nicely detailed as it is immense. Elsewhere, tasteful use of chrome accenting and unique wheel styles add further flagship flair to Lincoln’s biggest people mover. Few shoppers will be left wanting for more in terms of space and style.

Don’t Miss: The cabin. Designed to work hand in hand with the Navigator’s prominent sense of exterior style, the one-of-a-kind interior goes in its own direction, and was carefully crafted to draw attention from the tech-savvy luxury driver. Abundant wood trim, rich leather, and high-tech displays culminate in a relaxing but highly-connected atmosphere.

2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Model: Chevrolet Corvette C8

Why: Like the Hyundai Sonata further up the list, the new C8 earns a spot on our list for looks and presence that punch above its weight. With exotic proportions and no shortage of drama and tension dialled in, the world’s most affordable supercar also represents Chevrolet‘s forward-thinking take on modern performance car design.

The short nose and long rear bodywork proudly convey the C8’s new mid-engine setup, and numerous air intakes, vents, and aerodynamic implements are cleanly integrated within the angular bodywork. A menacing face and distinctive tail help fans identify the C8 from a quick glance, and the all-American V8 powerplant is proudly displayed beneath a transparent panel for all to see.

Contrasting color accenting adds further excitement, and designers have created an array of thin-spoke wheels, which proudly showcase the high-performance braking components beneath.

Don’t Miss: The driving position. The C8 driver is positioned smack in the middle of the car, just above the prominent door-mounted air intake for the engine behind them. The low nose and more substantial rear bodywork accommodate the mid-mounted engine, and mark the first major change to Corvette’s silhouette in many generations.

Land Rover has officially joined the PHEV wagon. The Range Rover Evoque and the Land Rover Discovery Sport will now be available as plug-in hybrids.

Both models will bear the name P300e. A 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder will power both the quirky crossover and the junior Discovery at their core. The engine itself makes just 197 hp but combined with the motor at the rear axle and a 15 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the output jumps to 304 hp, backed by 398 lb-ft of torque. Power flows through an eight-speed automatic transmission in contrast to the eight-speed unit used on most other models. According to Land Rover, it is not only lighter than the other gearbox but much smoother as well.

According to Land Rover the Evoque and the Discovery Sport return mileage ratings of 201 and 175 mpg-equivalent respectively. The British brand also claims all-electric ranges of 41 and 38 miles, respectively, while the CO2 emissions stand at 32 g/km.

The pair uses the company’s new Premium Transverse Architecture, which was specifically developed with hybrids in mind. The 15 kWh battery pack can charge up to 80 percent from empty in just half an hour using a 32 KW DC charger. If you use a 7 kW AC charger, the figure jumps to 84 minutes. Using a standard wall socket will require over six hours of charging time. The batteries lie under the rear seats and according to Land Rover, “a 6mm-thick steel undertray protects the battery without compromising the vehicles’ hallmark all-terrain capability.”

In terms of performance, the Evoque can do the 0–60 mph sprint in 6.1 seconds while the Disco is just a tenth slower than the smaller crossover. The pair can also go up to 84 mph in pure electric mode.

The Evoque and Discover Sport P300e will be available in the S, SE and HSE versions, at least for now, in the UK. So far there’s no word on North American availability, but we can expect the cars to arrive by late next year, especially given the current global climate. Expect prices to start from $45,000 for the Evoque and around $40,000 for the Discovery Sport.

For the latest information on the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to check the World Health Organization website.

Numerous car plants across the globe are halting production for days or weeks in a concerted effort to keep employees safe. In the US, Honda was the first to announce a production stoppage on March 18, lasting six days. Soon after GM, Ford, FCA, and Nissan announced their own planned shutdowns. Many dealerships are following suit in closing, or at least running reduced business hours.

We’re in uncharted waters, and that’s resulted in various programs and discounts that could benefit you, the current (or prospective) car buyer. Below we’ll be keeping an updated list of the payment assistance programs or buying and leasing deals.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles

On March 19 FCA announced zero-percent financing for 84 months for select models from its Ram, Dodge and Jeep brands. April saw an expansion of the plan to all brands—that’s including Chrysler, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo—in addition to no payments for the first 90 days. All FCA brands will now offer an Online Retail Experience where potential buyers can go through most of the purchase process without having to leave their homes.

For specific deals we recommend calling your local dealership.

Ford

Ford announced its “Built to Lend a Hand” program on March 19. The program provides up to six months of support for buyers of 2019 and 2020 model year vehicles (except the F-Series Super Duty) who may have been affected by the coronavirus. The offer is split between three months of Ford paying, and three months of deferred payments.

Roughly 75 percent of the 3,000 or so American Ford dealerships will also be offering remote vehicle delivery, for both sales and service. During March and April, the Blue Oval will be incentivizing this approach, offering payments to dealers who take part in vehicle delivery.

This program comes on the back of a Ford Credit program announced Monday, March 16. It covers existing Ford owners, allowing them to call Ford Credit to discuss payment options in the face of coronavirus-related work disruptions. You can find more details at the Ford Credit website.

General Motors

The General has announced a sweeping program for all of its brands, including Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. It’s leading with a different approach, focusing on connectivity for its current customers.

Every WiFi-equipped model will have access to three months or 3 GB of complimentary data, whichever comes first. OnStar Crisis Assist will also be available for all current models at no charge for a limited time. This can connect drivers with advisors available 24/7 for emergency info, and provides routing to hospitals and clinics. The advisors are connected to crucial information centers like the CDC, FEMA and DHS.

Like FCA, GM is offering an interest-free, seven-year financing plan for most of its 2019 and 2020 models when working with GM Financial. The automaker is also allowing customers to defer payments for up to 120 days.

If you’re an existing customer affected by COVID-19, GM is urging you to call GM Financial to discuss personalized payment plans.

Honda

2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid front

Current Honda customers will be eligible for up to 90 days’ worth of payment deferrals or extensions during this time. Those financing a new car through Acura or Honda Financial Services may be able to defer their first payment for up to 90 days, with some limitations. The 90-day deferred payment is not available in Florida.

In addition to the above, Honda will be putting $1,000 on the hood of select new models; Acura, $500.

Hyundai

April 03 Update: Hyundai has announced that it will be extending its car and powertrain warranty in the US and the world to give its customers some peace of mind in these trying times. The South Korean Automaker announced that all vehicles with 5-year/60,000 mile and 10-year/100,000 warranties expiring between March 2020 and June 2020 will get warranty extensions up to June 30, 2020. Hyundai has taken this action in the light of many dealerships and service stations being closed due to Coronavirus despite being classified under essential businesses. This has caused confusion among customers and the warranty extension will put over one million minds at ease.

Hyundai has brought back Hyundai Assurance, a program it first launched in 2009 during the most recent recession.

Like Ford, the Korean automaker is offering up to 90 days of deferred payments for select new Hyundais bought between March 14 and April 30. Hyundai will also cover up to six months of payments in the event a buyer has lost their job due to coronavirus, double Ford’s offer.

The 90-day deferred payment offer applies to new vehicle purchases only. The six-month payment relief, on the other hand, applies to both financed and leased models. Both use the Korean automakers financing division Hyundai Capital.

Genesis

Genesis is offering a similar program to its Korean sister brand under the name Genesis Cares. That means up to 90 days of deferred payments and up to six monthly payments from the automaker for those affected by COVID-19.

Infiniti

2020 Infiniti QX80 off-roading

Infiniti announced its coronavirus support program in mid-April. With its in-house Infiniti Financial Services, the Japanese luxury maker is offering zero-percent APR financing for up to six years on its entire fleet. In addition, it will also defer payments for up to 90 days. These offers will run until June 30, 2020.

Many Infiniti dealers now offer remote delivery to buyers’ homes using CDC guidelines, and offer contactless service pick-ups.

Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar Land Rover announced its own support program for new and existing customers on April 6. New customers will be able to get zero-percent financing on all 2020 Jaguar or Land Rover models, as well as the 2021 F-Type, for 72 months through JLR Financial Group. A payment deferral program is also in place for up to three months, with a financing cap of $100,000.

Existing JLR drivers will have access to lease extensions of up to six months. In addition, for returning customers who start a new lease, Jaguar will waive two payments of up to $750 each. The offer applies to all Jag models and most Land Rovers (not including the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport).

Mazda

2020 Mazda CX-30 Review

Mazda started April with the announcement of Mazda Financial Services, in partnership with Toyota’s financing company. MFS will offer payment deferrals of up to 90 days on both new and certified used Mazda models purchased throughout the month of April.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi owners will be eligible for up to 120 days of deferred payments if they financed their vehicles through Ally. Those that buy a car during this time may also qualify for up to 90 days of deferred payment on their new vehicle. The news came from Fred Diaz, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America.

Nissan

Like many other brands, Nissan is offering a range of relief support for both current and future customers. The Japanese brand will provide up to three months of deferred payments and two months of waived payments for most new Nissans. Exceptions include the new Versa, Z Coupe, GT-R, Armada, Frontier, and NV vans. Also like other brands, this offer applies through Nissan’s financing arm.

Nissan is encouraging current owners to call its customer service department if they are worried about making payments. It is also waiving any late fees through April 30.

May 20 Update: Nissan is extending all eligible, previously-expired NissanConnect Services Premium Plus trials by three months. If you’re one of the folks this affects, you should have received an email detailing the extension, which can be activated any time between now and June 30.

Porsche

April 30 Update: Porsche has expanded its Coronavirus support programs with longer lease and warranty extensions, lower APRs on new and used car financing, and more.

For those with new cars with warranties expiring between March and May of this year, Porsche will automatically extend the warranties by three months. This means a warranty could now run to as late as August 31. “The purpose of a warranty is peace of mind, which is something we are happy
to provide at a time when it is needed most,” said Porsche Cars North America president Klaus Zellmer.

Porsche Financial Services is offering 1.95 percent APR on new and used cars for up to 60 months. In most states, it’s also offering buyers up to 90 days before they need to make their first payment. Both programs are compatible, with the lower APR applying to contracts up until June 1 and the 90-day first payment program applying until June 30.

Porsche is offering a four-pronged approach to customers during the pandemic. For starters, it’s making digital shopping easier for dealerships to add to their own websites, with only a single dealership visit needed for buyers to sign and drive away in their new vehicles. Current owners will also find increased access to home pick-ups for maintanence.

SEE ALSO: 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S First Drive Review

Those with leases set to wrap up between now and the end of May will have the option of extending their lease by up to six months. Lastly, Porsche is joining other automakers in offering payment deferrals, on a case-by-case basis. The German brand will offer either 30- or 60-day deferrals, which it states was very successful in aiding customers during the recession of 2008.

Toyota

2021 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition

Japan’s largest automaker announced its own support program on March 27. Toyota didn’t give any numbers, but did state it will provide payment relief options for customers of Toyota or Lexus Financial Services. According to the statement, “affected lease and finance customers may be eligible to take advantage of finance contract payment extensions or lease deferred payments.” Toyota and Lexus will also offer options to those whose leases are up or nearly so.

Volkswagen

May 7 Update: Volkswagen has extended its entire support program through June 1. For new customers this includes first-payment deferments of up to four months, zero-percent APR on terms up to 72 months, and up to six months of waived payments (of $750/month or less).

Current VW owners can qualify for three months’ worth of fee-free payment deferrals. The German automaker is also offering lease extensions of up to six months. Owners who extend their current lease by three months or more are also eligible for a 20 percent reduction in monthly payments for doing so.

Current owners looking for payment assistance are urged to visit vwcredit.com to discuss their situation.

Lastly, dealers will be running a new delivery program to help customers get their car serviced without leaving their homes.

Range Rover Fifty Celebrates Half a Century of Iconic SUV

[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com] The original luxury off-roader celebrates half a century with heritage-hued special edition.

On this day, June 17, Land Rover’s seminal Range Rover turns 50 years old. To celebrate, the British marque has debuted a special edition of the Rangie, harking back to that original model.

Dubbed, appropriately enough, Range Rover Fifty, the new model will be a strictly limited-production affair, capped at 1,970 examples. You see what Land Rover did there, right?

The RR Fifty uses the lux Autobiography trim as its base. Available in either regular- or long-wheelbase form, the Fifty will come with a number of engine options depending on market, including the plug-in hybrid and barking V8. The British marque will offer the Fifty with one of four exterior colors. All feature subtle Auric Atlas exterior trim—think pale bronze—including the grille, Range Rover lettering, and signature side blade. It looks super-classy to our eyes, far removed from the faux-gold badging on that ’90s Camry down the street.

SEE ALSO: 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar First Drive Review

Similarly low-key touches are present inside the Fifty too. A commemorative plaque documents the SUVs place in the production run, and comes with a special “Fifty” script badge designed by Land Rover’s CCO, Gerry McGovern. The wordmark finds its way onto the seat headrests, dashboard, and doorsill plates. It’s outside too, along with a unique set of 22-inch alloy wheels.

That’s all well and good, but we’re more interested in the limited-limited edition color options. JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations team will be offering the aluminum-bodied Fifty in three classic hues pulled from the original model’s lineup: Tuscan Blue, Bahama Gold, and Davos White. These three get blacked-out trim to more closely emulate the 1970 version—and they look awesome.

What price for this bit of four-wheeled birthday cake? Land Rover hasn’t announced North American pricing, but a 518-horsepower, V8-powered Autobiography SWB currently rings up at $145,095, including $1295 in destination.

Worst 10 Manufacturers for Initial Quality: J.D. Power 2020

Tesla has more initial problems than any other brand—but that status comes with a big asterisk.

You’ve seen the best, now see the rest. When J.D. Power released its 2020 Initial Quality Study last month, which tallies the number of problems per 100 cars (PP100), it included a major surprise: an American brand topped the charts for the very first time. Not only that, but US brands filled exactly half of the top 10 spots. But just as there are winners, there have to be the worst performers in the yearly study. That’s where this list comes in.

Just like the “Best” list, an American brand sits at the top of this one: Tesla. Well, sort of. This is the first year J.D. Power has been able to score the brand, but the analytics company is quick to point out Tesla’s wooden spoon isn’t an official ranking. “Unlike other manufacturers, Tesla doesn’t grant us permission to survey its owners in 15 states where it is required,” said Doug Betts, president of the automotive division at J.D. Power. “However, we were able to collect a large enough sample of surveys from owners in the other 35 states and, from that base, we calculated Tesla’s score.”

There’s less shake-up here than the “Best” list. J.D. Power revised the scoring method this year, including infotainment issues—which brought the industry average up some 50 percent. This implies that these manufacturers are still struggling with traditional issues as well as tech trouble.

The bottom third of the list is filled with luxury brands, suggesting a common thread amongst them. Read on for the full list.

10. Acura

Acura moves up a single place over last year, but it’s not enough to escape the bottom 10. The manufacturer has a mix of old (its sedans) and new (its SUVs) contributing to its score. The RDX compact crossover is selling well, and we’re hopeful for the return of the sporting Acura sedan in the shape of the 2021 TLX.

The latest batch of upgrades has included a gigantic, portrait-orientation touchscreen, as seen in the Legacy and Outback.

Chrysler is the odd one out in FCA’s lineup of American brands. The others all scored near the top, with Jeep being the second-lowest at 11th overall. Why is Chrysler still down in the bottom 10, a regular occurrence for the brand? It’s hard to say. The ancient 300 shares its platform with the Dodge Charger—the top-rated brand this year—and the only other modern Chrysler product is the Pacifica. Dodge’s minivan has its own unique platform, including a plug-in hybrid version.

Jaguar is another brand we’re unfortunately used to seeing in the bottom rungs of the IQS. On the plus side, it moved up this year, after the ignominious title of lowest-ranking brand in 2019. Not much has changed for the storied British lineup in 2020; the biggest news is the update to the F-Type sports car, which somehow manages to look even better now.

The Slowest-Selling New Vehicles of 2020 (So Far)

0
0

SUVs and crossovers top the list, which could spell great deals if you’re in the market.

Look, car sales took a dive this year. We all know why. The global pandemic took its toll on the North American market starting in March, and it’s still recovering. Not all cars and SUVs were impacted equally however, and those looking to pick up a new vehicle can take advantage of the situation by focusing on vehicles that sit on dealer lots for longer than the industry average.

In a recent study, iSeeCars sifted through millions of new and used car sales between March and June 2020 to determine how the average days until sale. New vehicles take 96.9 days to move off dealer lots, on average, according to the study. However, some models take far longer—in fact, the slowest-moving new vehicle takes more than double the time to shift. That can be a handy bargaining tool if you’re in the market, and know what to look for.

Surprisingly, SUVs and crossovers occupy eight of the top 10 spots. They might now out-sell cars, but the sheer number of high-riding vehicles out there suggests supply and demand aren’t quite in sync. Read on for the full list in ascending order.

10. Infiniti QX60: 149.9 days

2020 Infiniti QX60 in white static shot

We start the list with the three-row Infiniti QX60. This softer, car-like crossover is the middle child of the Infiniti SUV lineup, slotting between the newer QX50 and the full-size QX80.

SEE ALSO: 2020 Infiniti QX60 Review: First Impressions

The QX60 is far from the newest model in its class. That said, it does offer a spacious interior, and its simplified model range means even a top-spec Luxe AWD slides in under $50,000 before any discounts or options. If you’re looking for an entry-level luxury people hauler, the QX60 fits the bill.

09. Land Rover Range Rover Velar: 150.4 days

Luxury brands show up a handful of times in this list, and the first is the newest member of the Land Rover family. The Velar debuted in 2017, sharing its platform with the Jaguar F-Pace.

SEE ALSO: 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar First Drive Review

The Velar sits, on average, for just over 150 days on dealer lots this year before finding a home. Prices start at $56,300 for its smooth looks and minimalist interior.

08. Cadillac Escalade ESV: 151.1 days

cadillac escalade

Looking for big American luxury? The Cadillac Escalade is the long-standing template for the large, premium SUV segment. It gets even biglier in extended-wheelbase ESV form—and it’s that version that dealers have a harder time shifting.

SEE ALSO: 2018 Cadillac Escalade Review

The savings opportunities are two-fold for the Escalade: it’s one of the slowest models to move off the lots, and it’s on the verge of being replaced by an all-new generation in a matter of weeks. The ESV typically starts at $79,490, and Cadillac is currently offering $9,500 in cash allowances for it.

07. Nissan Armada: 151.2 days

06. Nissan Altima: 151.9 days

The Nissan Altima is a surprise on this list. Not only is it one of only two sedans—the second is up next—but it’s also the newest vehicle here. The current sixth-generation Altima showed up as a 2019 model.

SEE ALSO: 2020 Nissan Altima vs 2020 Subaru Legacy Comparison

The sedan brings sharper looks, a very clever, variable-compression turbocharged engine, and available all-wheel drive to the mid-size segment. Nissan’s CVT is the only transmission choice regardless of engine or drivetrain, however. We challenge you to not get comfortable in the optional Zero Gravity seats.

05. Chevrolet Impala: 153.1 days

2018 chevrolet impala

The Chevrolet Impala is dead. The last of the Bow Tie’s full-size sedan rolled off the production line on February 27, 2020. GM ended the long-running name due to slow sales, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the Impala still languishes on lots.

The full-size sedan segment has been a niche for at least a generation by now. That said, it’s still a handsome—if conservative—car, and some people want that big, comfy ride that only these sorts of sedans can offer. If you’re that type, you could find a great deal here versus something like a Toyota Avalon.

For a long time, the little Buick Encore was the first step into the brand. Its diminutive dimensions make it a popular pick in the city, while available all-wheel drive broaden its appeal out of it.
