top 10 best looking crossovers and suvs of 2017

SUVs and crossovers aren’t traditionally very “pretty,” but automakers are proving that these once boxy utilitarian vehicles can be quite the lookers.

So, for those who prefer to start their shopping experience with the most attractive cars available, you’ve come to the right place. There are attractive SUVs and crossovers at every price point, too, although a lot of the prettiest ones tend to be more upscale.

SEE ALSO: The Safest Crossovers and SUVs of 2017

Since beauty is subjective, not everyone will agree with our picks. But in alphabetical order, here are the top 10 best looking crossovers and SUVs we believe are available in 2017.

Acura MDX

2017 acura mdx

The three-row Acura MDX was recently updated and it got a stylish new front end that makes it one of the best looking SUVs available. The big diamond grille, massive badge, and jewel headlights do a lot to make the new MDX look more upscale. The 2017 Acura MDX comes standard with a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. There’s also a Sport Hybrid model featuring a 3.0-liter V6 engine combined with three electric motors to produce a combined system output of 321 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

2017 alfa romeo stelvio

Alfa Romeo’s first SUV has captured many hearts simply because of how good it looks. The signature Alfa Romeo grille translated really well onto the aggressive-looking crossover and the proportions are pretty perfect. Pricing for the Alfa Romeo Stelvio hasn’t been announced, but it will be available in three trim levels when it goes on sale: Stelvio, Stelvio Ti, and Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The standard powertrain is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 280 hp and 306 lb-ft of torque, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Those wanting more performance will love the Quadrifoglio variant, which has 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque from a Ferrari-sourced 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine.

Infiniti QX70

2017 infiniti qx70 limited

Infiniti’s lineup is full of crossovers and SUVs, but the unique QX70 is the automaker’s most stylish one. What’s interesting is that this design is quite old, but it has aged really well. Often described as looking like a bionic cheetah, its powerful stance and unique headlights help it stand out. Under its long hood rests a 3.7-liter V6 engine with 325 hp and 267 pound-feet of torque.

Jaguar F-Pace

2017 jaguar f-pace

Arguably the best-looking SUV available today is the Jaguar F-Pace. It’s the British automaker’s first luxury SUV and is even more affordable for the 2018 model year thanks to the addition of an entry-level 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. There’s also a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder diesel engine offering 180 hp, a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine with 340 hp, and a range-topping 380-hp model with the same supercharged V6.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

2017 land rover range rover sport svr

Land Rover has been in the business of making luxury SUVs for decades and the new Range Rover Sport may be the British automaker’s best looking one yet. We love the Rover’s imposing stance, flat hood, and floating roof design. It comes standard with a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged engine providing 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Pricing starts from $66,645, so it’s certainly one of the more expensive options on the list.

Maserati Levante

2017 maserati levante

There’s little surprise that Maserati’s first SUV is gorgeous. The Italian automaker has been in the business of designing beautiful cars since its inception and the Levante is a welcomed addition to the segment. The signature upright Maserati grille and side vents look fantastic on this mean, yet classy looking SUV and it really does look more like a sports car than an SUV. The Levante comes standard with a 3.0-liter V6 engine generating 350 hp, that’s good for a zero-to-62 mph (zero-to-100 km/h) time of six seconds flat. There’s also a diesel option as well as the more powerful Levante S with 430 hp.

Mazda CX-9

2017 mazda cx-9

As one of the more affordable models on this list, the 2017 Mazda CX-9 is one of the stylish SUVs available today. The SUV’s swoopy lines and strong upright grille help it look more expensive than it actually is. It comes standard with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.

Mercedes-AMG GLC 63

2017 mercedes-amg glc 63

Mercedes-Benz along with its high-performance AMG arm have been introducing new crossovers and SUVs at a rapid pace. But its best-looking SUV offering is the recently debuted AMG GLC 63, which has a grille that’s very similar to the one on the sexy AMG GT sports car — it translates nicely onto this high-performance SUV. Under the hood is a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine that produces 469 hp on the standard model, while the GLC 63 S brings 503 hp. The S model, however, is only available as a “coupe-style” SUV, and we’re not big fans of how that one looks.

Toyota C-HR

2018 toyota c-hr

Originally born a Scion, the Toyota C-HR’s styling might not be for everyone, but we’re fans because it gets points for originality. The funky Toyota C-HR has very exaggerated styling and is also the cheapest model on our list. It’s proof that budget offerings don’t have to look boring. The C-HR comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine providing 144 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque.

Volvo XC90

2017 volvo xc90

Volvo is enjoying a resurgence following a few years of financial woes and the introduction of the new XC90 certainly helped put it back on the map in the luxury segment. With a handsome and understated design, the Volvo is undeniably Scandinavian. Because of its simplicity, we think this one will age nicely, too. The XC90 offers plenty of features to go with its good looks, like the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and a lovely interior.

Although the new Range Rover Velar made its international debut just last month, a high-performance SVR variant is already in the works.

Spotted by sharpshooters outside Jaguar Land Rover’s Nurburgring testing facility, the heavily camouflaged Velar SVR sports a new front clip, larger air intakes, and bigger brakes, while SVR’s signature quad-tipped active exhaust is tucked out of sight behind the rear bumper.

Under the hood, the hopped-up Velar is believed to be hiding the same supercharged 5.0-liter V8 as its platform mate, Jaguar’s F-Pace SVR — which was also on hand hot-lapping the venerable German circuit:

It’s possible the supercharged V8, in combination with a sport-tuned AWD system, will propel the mid-sizer to highway speeds in less than 4 seconds, toppling Porsche’s class-leading Macan Turbo.

If the Velar is anything like the Range Rover Sport SVR, it should receive JLR’s Dynamic Response system, which is responsible for the utterly absurd cornering capability of the big brute, along with an upgraded aerodynamics package.

No interior peeks were possible, but like other SVR kin, expect embossed sports buckets, unique colorways, upgraded leather, carbon fiber detailing and special badging.

It’s unclear when the Range Rover Velar SVR is expected to make an official appearance, but Jag’s version should hit stores later this year.

Land Rover has teamed up with Sir Ben Ainslie to try and win the America’s Cup for Britain for the first time ever this year and Land Rover has a new innovation that it believes will help Ainslie immensely as he looks to bring the Auld Mug back to Britain.

Land Rover has developed a unique steering wheel for Ainslie’s 15-meter ‘R’1’ catamaran that allows the former Olympian to make precise adjustments to the boat’s hydrofoils using paddle shifters. The paddle shifters are located on the rear of the steering wheel, just like on Land Rover’s SUVs, and were moulded to fit helmsman Ainslie’s fingers perfectly.

“This is not just a great piece of design and engineering, but beautiful craftsmanship,” Ainslie said of the wheel. “The controls are intuitive and smooth, with just the right amount of feel and feedback. It really has made a difference to how I control R1.”

ALSO SEE: 2017 Land Rover Discovery Review

When Ainslie pulls one of the paddle shifters, the boat’s hydrofoils lift it out of the water, allowing it to reach its top speed more quickly. In an average 20-minute race, he would make around 1200 inputs with the hydrofoil paddles, which Land Rover says was developed using technical know-how from the paddle shifters on its road cars.

Ben Ainslie Racing in partnership with Land Rover will contest the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup over the next couple months. Qualifying for the highly prestigious race is to be held in Bermuda from May 26th to June 3rd, which will see nine challengers advance to the final. The winner of the final will race the 35th America’s Cup, which will be held in Bermuda between June 17th and June 27th.

Jaguar Land Rover Boss Defends Diesel Engines

land rover range rover diesel engine

Don’t expect Jaguar Land Rover to give up on diesel engines anytime soon.

While some automakers are pulling away from diesel engines following Volkswagen’s scandal, Jaguar Land Rover boss Ralf Speth is going on the defensive, attacking the “demonization” of modern diesel engines. Speaking to Autocar, Speth confirmed the British automaker will continue to promote modern diesel technology, adding that diesels are important in meeting strict emissions regulations. “The latest diesel technology is really such a step in emissions, performance, particulates; it’s better for the environment when compared to petrol,” he said. “Diesel has to – needs to – have a future.”

SEE ALSO: Land Rover Range Rover Td6 Review

Speth believes diesel technology serves as a bridge to ensure emissions continues to fall until hybrid and electric vehicles become more common. He suggested Volkswagen’s diesel scandal kicked off the demonization of modern diesel engines but added that the entire industry suffers because the German automaker used manipulation software, not just Volkswagen itself.

He also admitted that electric vehicles are the future of the industry, while fuel cells are “poor from an environmental point of view.”

Jaguar Land Rover is aiming to have about 25 to 30 percent of its sales to be of electric cars by 2025. In the near future – by 2020 – half of the automaker’s models will come with some form of electrification.

Land Rover watercraft will try to make America’s Cup history in Bermuda.

Led by five-time Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie, Land Rover hopes to become the first British winner of the oldest trophy in international sport. America’s Cup sailing is often called “F1 on water,” and is faster, more competitive, and more technically advanced than ever before. The boats are capable of reaching speeds of 60 mph, flying above the surface while pushing the boundaries of aerodynamics, control systems, data analysis, and performance — all in the pursuit of optimum speed and efficiency.

The Land Rover BAR is the result of a two-year collaboration between the team and Land Rover, its Exclusive Innovation Partner. The British automaker contributed with its technological innovation and engineering expertise, ranging from aerodynamic testing and CFD modeling of the boat’s main power source, the wing, to data analysis through machine learning and the Human Machine Interface technologies used in the development of Ben Ainslie’s steering wheel and e-ink display screens.

Toyota Retains Spot As World’s Most Valuable Car Brand

$

Toyota was found to be the world’s most valuable car brand in a recent study conducted by a market research group, with the Japanese automaker boasting a total brand value of $28.7 billion.

The ranking, which is part of the annual BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study, lists the world’s most valuable automakers by overall brand value. Toyota has been in the No. 1 spot for the past 12 years, though its value was down 3 percent this year compared to 2016’s study.

Second on the list was BMW with a total brand value of $24.6 billion. The German automaker’s value dipped 8 percentage points compared to last year, however, which was apparently due to rising investment costs and a sales lull in the U.S. BMW is also beginning to feel the pressure from Mercedes-Benz, with its rival’s value rising 4 percent to $23.5 billion, making it the world’s third most valuable automotive manufacturer.

SEE ALSO: Tesla’s Market Value Tops All Other American Automakers

The top three automotive manufacturers have a huge gap on the remaining seven. Ford was fourth in the ranking with a value of $13.2 billion, less than half that of Toyota’s, followed by Honda in fifth at $12.2 billion, Nissan in sixth at $11.3 billion, Audi in seventh at $9.1 billion, Tesla in eighth at $5.9 billion, Land Rover in ninth at $5.5 billion and finally Porsche in tenth at $5.1 billion.

Tesla was perhaps the strongest performer of the past year, rising 32 percentage points to surpass Land Rover and Porsche in the ranking. Tesla’s brand value isn’t so much related to its current stable of products, but a promise of what’s to come and an overall brand experience. Much like a technology company, it currently enjoys a strong brand perception that most other automakers do not.

Jaguar Land Rover is the Latest to Patent an Active Aero System

[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com]

Jaguar Land Rover is the latest automaker to patent an active aerodynamics system, though the British brand’s concept of adaptable aerodynamics is unique.

A recently published application in the U.K. details what the British automaker is calling a “vehicle aerodynamic apparatus,” and it’s quite different than existing active aero systems. Chevy recently patented an active aero system, but the American automaker is going after speed and handling for its sports car, while JLR seems to be more interested in fuel efficiency.

In the patent application, Jaguar Land Rover explains how the drag of the rear-facing surfaces of a car can account for upwards of 30 percent of the total drag. A traditional way of combating this is “boat tailing,” a styling cue which sees the rear end of a vehicle taper inwards vertically and horizontally.

But as Jaguar Land Rover explains, aesthetic and packaging considerations limit its applicability in automotive design, as not all designs fit with this tapered rear end look.

The company hopes to change that with its active aero system, which essentially allows a vehicle’s rear end to squeeze in a small amount to create a natural boat tail. The patent application also details air inlet openings formed in vertical fins that would direct air over an outer skin of a rear deck lid and onto a rear air deflection device.

SEE ALSO: Jaguar XS Trademark Hints at Possible XJ Replacement

Although the active aero system would benefit Land Rover’s large SUVs like the Range Rover, the patent application also includes images of the system being applied to Jaguar’s sedans. It’s likely the British automaker would use the technology across all its vehicles, aiding in aerodynamics and improving fuel efficiency.

The patent is clearly focused on improving efficiency, but as the Lamborghini Huracan Performante has shown, active aero could certainly improve the performance of Jaguar’s sports cars, like the F-Type. We’ll have to wait and see if the brand tries to use this technology to make its performance cars quicker at the race track.

The only real bad news is that according to Jaguar, this active aero system won’t be something that makes it to production for a long while.

Why Does Land Rover Compete in a Boat Race?

$
0
0

It’s pretty obvious why Subaru would sponsor a rally team and it’s only natural when Mercedes races in F1, but Land Rover competing in a boat race might at first glance seem to make as much sense as NASA backing a body building competition.

But as far as partnerships in the automotive sphere go, the link between Land Rover and competitive sailing actually makes a ton of sense.

A Bit of Background

For this year’s competition in Bermuda, Land Rover and sailing superstar Sir Ben Ainslie joined forces to create a brand new team to compete in the 35th America’s Cup, which at 166 years old, is the world’s oldest sporting trophy. Referred to as “The Greatest Race on Water,” many say that the America’s Cup is what would happen if F1 was held at sea — both races involve high speeds, the best technology the industry has to offer, intense rivalries, a lot of drama, and high stakes.

Despite its first ever race in 1851 being organized by Brits and held in the U.K., a British team has never won a race — the Americans have won every single race in history except for when an Australian team won once in 1983. Prince William, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and the Royal Family have personally expressed their great interest in bringing the trophy to the U.K. for the first time, so, you know, no pressure or anything…

35th America's Cup Bermuda

This partnership goes far beyond a simple sponsorship, hashtag, or branding exercise, though. Land Rover and BAR (Ben Ainslie Racing) are innovation partners — the toughest and fastest race on water needs the best technology, design, and engineering to be won.

“This is the pinnacle of sailing,” said Martin Whitmarsh, the CEO of Land Rover BAR who comes to sailing after a long career in F1, during a pre-race briefing in Bermuda. “So these are the most technologically advanced boats in the world, the best sailors in the world, and the strongest sailing teams in the world,” he said. “Land Rover brings to us a breadth and depth of engineering knowledge that really makes us stronger.”

Sharing Technology

The race has changed dramatically in the past 10 years because technology is progressing incredibly quickly, which makes the race faster and more intense.

35th America's Cup Bermuda

“If you were to compare the progression of development of these boats over the past 10 years to the automotive industry, cars would now be breaking the speed of sound,” said Dirk Kramers, head of Land Rover BAR engineering.

During early races, the Land Rover BAR boat was recording speeds of nearly 56 mph (90 km/h) and the reason it can go that fast is by “flying,” which is a recent development that made the race faster than it has ever been. The boats are now able to lift themselves out of the water so that less surface area is being dragged through the water, which is much more difficult to move through than air; the more time a boat can spend flying in the air, the faster it can sail, and the more likely the team is to win the race.

“There are three areas that Land Rover engineers are directly involved in,” explains Ian Anderton, head of aerodynamics at Jaguar Land Rover — machine learning and artificial intelligence, human-machine interface systems, and aerodynamics and performance predictions.

land-rover-bar-r1-race-boat

Understanding the aerodynamics of the sail, which is the “powerhouse of the boat,” Anderton says, “allows us to understand how to exactly optimize that structure” to help the boat be faster and more efficient.

“It’s about taking data off the boat and understanding that data and being able to interpret what’s actually going on to look for performance gains,” Anderton says. For sailing, this is done in the same way that engineers test cars in the research and development stage — massive amounts of data gathered from sensors are logged during test runs and such, then algorithms are developed and deployed to make sense out of complicated data for very tangible takeaways on how to improve.

ALSO SEE: 2017 Land Rover Discovery Review

What the engineers have learned in the past two years about aerodynamics by working on the boat and the software they developed for doing so is already being applied directly to research for Land Rover’s SUVs. “We’ve taken exactly that learning and begun to apply it to our vehicles,” Anderton says.

“Cars push their way through the air the same way a boat does,” he says, adding that as sails move through the wind, they change shape and deform, which affects their aerodynamic properties. “Like sails on a boat, we’re looking at a car’s body panels,” he says, explaining that if they can understand how a car’s body panels change while pushing through the wind, they can use that to make the cars more efficient, all without wasting time building prototypes — they are now able to use data to make more realistic computer simulations, which wasn’t available to the team in this scope before BAR.

“What that means is I can take weight out of the car because I can take stiffness out of body panels where I don’t need it and I can put it back in where I realize that I do. I wasn’t able to do that before without being able to look at these aerodynamic simulations that we’ve now got,” Anderton says, adding that these methods were previously unavailable to them. “We never had the ability go and develop that tool and that method because we were too busy making a car, and this has given us this platform to develop something advanced like this and use it now.”

Anderton believes this is a huge competitive advantage over Land Rover’s automotive and sailing competition, as he doesn’t think other teams and automakers are using this technology in the same way they are.

ALSO SEE: Jaguar Land Rover is the Latest to Patent an Active Aero System

In short, the more data Land Rover can gather and the more thoroughly and efficiently they can analyze it, the more they are able to build a stronger database of information, which will then lead to more intelligent technology in its cars.

The Right Audience and Lifestyle

Sailing is obviously a sport that appeals to folks of a certain income bracket, and besides being a popular choice for towing boats and other watercraft, Land Rover has always been known as a luxury brand. By aligning Land Rover with sailing and, in particular, a race with one of the world’s most prestigious brands in its name, the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup, Land Rover’s value as a luxury brand is cemented even more.

35th AC Cup Bermuda

But Anna Chambers, who is in charge of Land Rover sponsorships, says this program goes beyond just putting their logo on everything. “If you look at the demographics for this race, it’s an obvious partnership for us, but it’s really about our ethos, which is going Above and Beyond,” she explains. As an iconic British brand known for being able to take people anywhere, Chambers says there is no better brand than Land Rover to back a team hoping to conquer a grueling sailing race and bring the coveted trophy to Great Britain for the first time ever.

Land Rover’s Above and Beyond tagline speaks to the brand’s off-road capabilities and ability to conquer extreme environments, and as the toughest race on water, the ties are obvious. There is also a lot of Union Jack pride and patriotism going on here — a win for the team means a win for the entire United Kingdom.

Although competitive sailing is traditionally a very posh sport that appeals to an older and admittedly stuffy demographic, the seeds are being planted (or sails being repositioned, if you will) to make the America’s Cup more accessible and more interesting to younger people, so the sport is going through a period of extreme change, not unlike Land Rover, which is currently experiencing an era of growth and engineering.

Those changes include high-production value televised races, revised rules, tighter race schedules, and building teams of young and wildly handsome rockstars of the sailing world, which along with faster and more advanced boats will hopefully combine to make the race more exciting for more people.

End of the Race, Beginning of a Journey

Land Rover BAR was unfortunately eliminated in the semi-finals (sorry, Kate and Will), but for the team’s very first attempt at the America’s Cup, this should be considered a huge success. The drive to win is stronger than ever after the Bermuda race and Land Rover has even committed to partnering with BAR for another attempt to win the 36th America’s Cup.

And now that they’ve figured out how to make boats fly, maybe they can start making flying cars a reality, too.

Jaguar Land Rover has launched a new mixed reality app that serves as an innovative recruitment tool.

The British automaker is taking advantage of its collaboration with Gorillaz to recruit the next generation of engineering talent with a code-breaking challenge found in the virtual band’s app. According to the company, the best performers within the app will be fast-tracked through the recruitment process, as Jaguar Land Rover looks to hire thousands of new talent over the next year. Those interested can download the Gorillaz app on either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Late last year, Jaguar Land Rover announced Noodle, the band’s guitarist, as a brand ambassador and she’s helping recruit: “Can you crack the code? Put your skills to the test! Hey, maybe you might land yourself ‘the’ most badass job you can imagine,” she says. “Dare to win!”

SEE ALSO: Jaguar Land Rover Hires Cartoon as Brand Ambassador

The Gorillaz App launches a new Jaguar Land Rover recruitment area in the form of a 360-degree environment that is situated in the garage of the band’s home. It features all the iconic vehicles from the Gorillaz past and here, users can explore and take a two-part challenge. The first part of the challenge is designed to educate users about the benefits of electric vehicles and involves assembling the new Jaguar I-Pace Concept.

The second part is more demanding and is developed to engage and recruit aspiring electronic and software engineers. It focuses on cracking code in an Alternate Reality Game, featuring a series of code-breaking puzzles that will test their curiosity persistence, lateral thinking, and problem solving skills.

“As the automotive industry transforms over the next decade, fuelled by software innovation, we have to attract the best talent and that requires a radical rethink of how we recruit,” said Alex Heslop, Head of Electrical Engineering at Jaguar Land Rover. “Here, we’ve found an engaging way to recruit a diverse talent pool in software systems, cyber systems, app development and graphics performance. It will be the first of its kind.”

top 10 worst automakers in initial quality

The J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Initial Quality Study has been released.

Each year, the J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study examines 233 problems, organized into eight categories, measuring new vehicle quality at 90 days of ownership. This year’s study was based on nearly 80,000 responses from owners and lessees of 2017 model year vehicles, with consumers being surveyed from February through May.

SEE ALSO: Kia Edges Out Porsche to Top 2017 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

New vehicle quality overall for the industry reached a new record high, improving eight percent compared to last year’s record-setting year. The industry average for the 2017 study is 97 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), down from 105 a year ago. According to J.D. Power, the only category to do worse this year was features, controls, and displays. The largest increases in problems were for cruise control, lane departure warning, collision avoidance/alert systems, and blind spot warning.

10. Infiniti and Jeep (tie)

infiniti badge

Infiniti owners reported 107 PP100, making Nissan’s luxury arm the 10th worst automaker for initial quality. Last year, the Japanese automaker actually did better than the industry average of 105 with a score of 103, but this year it failed to improve while other automakers did.

With a score of 107, Jeep is actually tied with Infiniti this year. The American automaker looked to be on an upward trend after scoring 113 last year, putting it out of the bottom 10 automakers. But this year, it stumbled back down the list.

8. Subaru

subaru badge

Last year, Subaru barely missed being in the bottom 10 of the list with a score of 118. This year, however, the Japanese automaker is the eighth worst automaker after scoring 113.

7. Audi

audi badge

As the only German automaker in the bottom 10, Audi performs quite a bit worse than its rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz. This year, Audi scored 115, which is slightly worse than last year’s score of 110. In 2016, however, Audi outperformed Mercedes (111), but that isn’t the case this year.

6. Mazda

mazda badge

Mazda continues to be one of the worst-performing automakers on the J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study. The Japanese automaker finished as the sixth worst automaker last year as well with a score of 127. This year, owners reported 125 problems per 100 vehicles.

5. Land Rover and Mitsubishi (tie)

land rover badge

Land Rover improves slightly from its fourth worst finish last year after scoring 132. The British automaker doesn’t have a great reputation for reliability and this year it scored 131.

Mitsubishi ties Land Rover with a score of 131, and is one of few automakers that saw a significant drop in initial quality compared to last year. In 2016, the Japanese automaker scored 116, keeping it out of the bottom 10.

3. Volvo

volvo badge

Volvo owners continue to have issues with their vehicles, and once again, the Swedish automaker is the third worst automaker in initial quality. This year, the brand scored 134, and while it’s an improvement compared to last year’s 152, it still puts Volvo towards the bottom of the list.

2. Jaguar

jaguar badge

Last year, Jaguar was the seventh worst automaker on the list after scoring 127. This year, it stumbled almost to the bottom, with owners reporting 148 problems per 100 vehicles. The only silver lining for the British automaker is that it isn’t the worst automaker in initial quality.

1. Fiat

fiat badge

This year, that honor belongs to Fiat with a score of 163. Last year, the Italian automaker managed to finish second to last with a score of 174, bested only by Smart’s figure of 216. This year, however, Smart was not included in the study due to lack of representation in the survey.

Jaguar Land Rover’s SVO Really Wants to be Like Mercedes-AMG

Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division is eyeing its own sports car.

Much like how Mercedes‘ AMG performance arm has the AMG GT sportscar, Jaguar Land Rover‘s SVO hopes to one day build its own models, according to managing director John Edwards. Currently SVO specializes in creating upgraded variants of existing models, much like how AMG started with Mercedes-Benz. Most recently, the division rolled out the Jaguar XE SV Project 8, a hardcore version of the sedan bringing nearly 600 horsepower to the table.

“Deep down we want to make our own model,” Edwards told Auto Express in an interview. “Just look at the success of the AMG GT.”

But before it starts creating its own models, SVO will focus on getting the early Project cars right, added Edwards. Although he wouldn’t confirm what’s next in the pipeline, Edwards suggested the Jaguar F-Pace and Range Rover Velar had “great potential.” In other words, you can expect one of the next model’s to emerge from SVO to be a performance crossover or SUV.

Land Rover Mulls Ultra Luxurious SUV to Rival Bentley Bentayga

Land Rover believes there’s room in its lineup for an ultra-luxurious SUV that sits above its current range topper, the $140,000 Range Rover SV Autobiography.

Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern responded “why not?” when Automotive News asked if the brand could introduce a new, more expensive flagship model. Such a vehicle wouldn’t necessarily be larger than the Range Rover Long Wheelbase, but simply more well-appointed.

“I would argue you could have two Range Rovers exactly the same size but if they had two personalities then they would both have equal appeal but to different customers,” McGovern said.

The British designer also noted the Range Rover currently covers a wide pricing range, starting at $85,000 and swelling to $199,000 for the extended wheelbase version of the SV Autobiography. Because of this, pushing the price up a bit more to offer the kind of luxury that rivals the $231,000 Bentley Bentayga wouldn’t be a big challenge.

Land Rover also believes its brand image is much stronger than Bentley’s in regards to SUVs, which will give it the edge should it come out with an ultra-luxurious offering.

“Bentley doesn’t have the pedigree and authenticity in that particular sector,” McGovern said. “We’ve got unquestionable pedigree.”

Jaguar Land Rover’s Classic Works Facility is a Treasure Trove of England’s Finest

The industrial park that Jaguar Classic Works calls home is as massive as it is modern, contrasting the otherwise quaint countryside that surrounds it.

The area is like a caricature of an English stereotype, with lush rolling hills and cottage-like homes as far as the eye can see. It’s the kind of stuff that makes for the perfect backdrop for the meticulously restored and maintained masterpieces that roll out of the Classic Works facility. By comparison, the brand new behemoth of a building that houses Classic Works seems like a bit of an odd fit to handle the preservation of such a rich automotive history. However, that all changes the moment you step through the front door.

This is the 150,000 sq-ft facility where the remaining nine examples of the famed Jaguar XKSS are being built from scratch. It’s also where owners of the Jaguar XJ220 can have their 25-year-old supercars maintained in a dedicated work space. (Seriously. There were seven of them in the various stages of service when I visited the facility before this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.) Jaguar Land Rover may be late to the classics game compared to some of its adversaries, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at the well-oiled machine running inside.

It was the automaker’s German-born CEO, Ralf Speth, who prompted the creation of this classic division, taking a page out of the books of German brands Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. With both experiencing success with similar businesses, Speth decided it was high time that JLR try its hand at the same. And so it was more than three years ago that he set the mandate for Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works, then known as Jaguar Heritage and Land Rover Heritage, to be established. This facility is the roundabout result.

ALSO SEE: Goodwood Festival of Speed is a Party and Everyone’s Invited

Getting past the building’s main reception area is no easy task, the showroom-like space teeming with cleanly built cars that look better than they did the day they rolled off the assembly line. The infamous E-Type is well-represented here, but so too are a few other models from JLR’s past, including the original Range Rover, as well as the Land Rover Series I.

Comically large windows separate this area from the 54-bay workshop, providing a glimpse into the work that goes into breathing new life into some of the automaker’s more significant models — as well as ones that are less notable. The space beyond the glass is clean and bright, and features all the amenities you’d find in a facility building brand new supercars.

This is where everything from complete restorations to small rebuilds take place, with each project being completed with the utmost attention to detail. Everything from a Jaguar XJ sedan of late 1990s vintage to one of the reborn E-Type Lightweight racers was in the workshop during my visit, while a few of the remaining XKSSs to be built were patiently awaiting their turn.

ALSO SEE: What It’s Like to Drive a Vintage 1955 Jaguar XK140

In the back of the building, away from prying eyes, is a sort of mecca for British metal. The windowless room has space for about 600 cars stacked two high, with something for everyone to be found amongst the maze of cars. Everything from vehicles awaiting restoration to restored ones awaiting a buyer — and others still that are too significant for JLR to part ways with — can be found in this treasure trove.

As you’d expect, it’s mostly Jaguars and Land Rovers parked back here. But there are also a few off-brand vehicles scattered amongst the 400 or so currently in inventory. Most are British makes, like Triumph and Rolls-Royce and MGB, but there are also a few stray Italians and Americans kicking around for good measure.

While this facility in the English countryside is the heart of Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works, the automaker has its sights set on expanding its role in the historic market. The first step is a smaller operation in Germany set to open by the end of this year, but JLR also has eyes on opening a similar space in North America in the near future.

Top 10 Most Unique Looking Everyday Cars

top 10 most unique looking everyday cars

There are a lot of unique looking cars out there, and some of them are even affordable, meaning you don’t need a hypercar to stand out from the crowd.

For the most part, automakers tend to stick to traditional styling for their vehicles, finding subtle ways to set them apart from the crowd. But every now and then, they like to go outside the box and design something so unique that it borders on strange.

SEE ALSO: The Short List: Top 10 Ugliest Cars

We decided to take a look at the top 10 most unique looking everyday cars, vehicles you will likely see on today’s roads. They may not be pretty, but they are definitely different.

10. Range Rover Evoque Convertible

land rover range rover evoque convertible

The Range Rover Evoque from Land Rover was a unique looking crossover when it first debuted, and now Land Rover has made even it stranger by chopping off its roof. It will be interesting to see how the Range Rover Evoque Convertible does on the market, considering another convertible crossover, the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, wasn’t exactly a hot seller.

Read our Range Rover Evoque Review

9. Fiat 500X

fiat 500x

The design of the standard Fiat 500 is iconic and the 500X is trying to replicate those cute looks in a crossover format. The funky compact crossover might have Italian flair and its quirky style isn’t for everyone, but it does stand out from other cars in its segment. Last year, Fiat managed to sell 11,712 units in the U.S. and 766 in Canada. Things aren’t looking better this year, as only 3,980 units in the U.S. and 786 in Canada have found new homes through June 2017.

Read our Fiat 500X Review

8. Jeep Renegade

jeep renegade

Although the Jeep Renegade’s front end does feature the automaker’s signature seven-slot grille, the rest of the compact crossover is quite unique to the brand. Sure, it has the same overall boxy profile we’ve come to expect, but it still has a special look that sets it apart. It’s also quite the success on the market, with Jeep selling 106,606 units in the U.S. last year and 3,962 in Canada. Sales aren’t slowing down either, as 53,027 Renegades have sold in the U.S. through June 2017, along with 2,968 units in Canada.

Read our Jeep Renegade Review

7. MINI Clubman

mini cooper s clubman all4

For the most part, MINI models have pretty unique styling, but the Clubman takes it to another level. While the front end resembles other existing MINI models, its wagon body doesn’t make the Clubman particularly mini. Last year, a total of 12,204 Clubmans were sold in the U.S., and through June 2017 the British automaker has sold 3,778 units in the U.S. and 456 in Canada.

6. Volkswagen Beetle

volkswagen beetle

Very few vehicles are as recognizable worldwide as the Volkswagen Beetle and it’s definitely one of the most unique-looking cars available today. The overall bubbly, round shape has defined the Beetle for generations and has helped it stand out from everything else on the market. With sales declining, however, the future of the Beetle is up in the air, according to the latest reports. Last year, Volkswagen sold 15,667 units in the U.S. and 2,402 in Canada. Sales this year are on a similar pace, with 8,821 units sold in the U.S. through June 2017, along with 1,773 units in Canada.

5. BMW i3

bmw i3

Considering it was built from the ground up to be an electric car, it’s little surprise the BMW i3 doesn’t look like a conventional car. But unlike the BMW i8 that looks like a proper supercar, the i3 is a bit oddly shaped with a fairly unique front end, especially compared to the rest of the German automaker’s lineup. In the U.S., a total of 7,625 BMW i3s sold last year and so far through June 2017, it has managed to move 2,992 off dealership lots. Unfortunately, BMW Canada bundles the i3 and i8 sales figures together, so it’s unclear how well the BMW i3 is doing in Canada.

4. Kia Soul

kia-soul-turbo

There was a time the funky, boxy Kia Soul had competition with the Scion xB and the Nissan Cube. But now the Scion brand is completely dead and Nissan has cut the Cube from its lineup, leaving the Soul by its lonesome, unless you consider the Jeep Renegade its competition. The unique looking crossover continues to do well for Kia, selling a total of 145,768 units last year in the U.S. and 12,672 in Canada. Through June 2017, sales have slowed a bit with 53,116 units sold in the U.S. and 5,312 in Canada.

3. Hyundai Veloster

hyundai veloster turbo

Hyundai‘s compact hatch has always been considered unique ever since its debut. With a low roofline, a sculpted front end, pronounced fenders, and the asymmetrical design, the Veloster is unlike any other hatchback offered today. Hot hatch fans can look forward to the Veloster N model that’s set to eventually arrive in the U.S. Last year, the Korean automaker sold 30,053 units in the U.S. and 1,831 units in Canada. This year, however, things aren’t as bright for the Veloster with 7,992 units sold in the U.S. through June and 1,829 in Canada.

Read our Hyundai Veloster Review

2. Toyota C-HR

toyota c-hr

The Toyota C-HR started its life as a Scion model, giving the youth-oriented brand a funky crossover. But Toyota decided to axe the Scion brand and now the automaker has the crossover all to itself. With its sporty stance and funky overall design, it stands out in a segment that’s full of jellybean-shaped subcompact crossovers. Introduced earlier this year, the C-HR has sold 5,498 units through June 2017 in the U.S. and 1,331 in Canada.

Read our Toyota C-HR Review

1. Nissan Juke

nissan juke

It almost seems like all the unique looking crossovers available today are trying to target the Nissan Juke, arguably the original funky crossover. Some might think this is the ugliest CUV available while others love its weirdness, but it is definitely unique either way. It appears the Juke could be losing ground to its competition, with the company selling 19,577 units in the U.S. last year and 4,442 in Canada. Through June 2017, 7,245 Jukes have been sold in the U.S. and 1,370 in Canada.

Land Rover is making it possible for the everyday person to go on an epic journey in the new Land Rover Discovery.

Namibia and Utah, two places separated by a distance of fifteen thousand kilometers, got a little bit closer when Land Rover recently announced two unique travel experiences for people wanting to test the new Discovery.

It’s no secret that the target market for the Discovery are well-heeled folks who enjoy an adventure. Bundling a trip to an exotic locale with an event to showcase the new Disco’s offroad chops, then, makes a lot of sense. After all, a test drive at the dealership can only reveal so much of the Discovery’s capability. Think of these experiences as a luxury vacation with some superb off-roading opportunities included for good measure.

The eight-day adventure in Namibia takes in Africa’s famous scenery and wildlife after drivers set off from an African lodge. Guests can see epic sand dunes, spot the continent’s great beasts in Etosha National Park, and witness where the Namib desert meets the South Atlantic Ocean. Expert instructors from the Land Rover Experience help drivers to make the most of their surroundings.

Land Rover Defender Will Return to North America

land rover defender

Details have come to light regarding the return of Land Rover’s long-running Defender model to the North American market.

This time around, things will be a little different. After a solid 67-year run (dating back to 1948 as the “Series” models), perhaps some changes were due. And this time, North America gets to see the new Defender at the same time as the rest of the world.

Keen Anglophiles will recall the prior Defender was sold on North American shores between 1993 and 1997. Defender 90 and 110 models were available in various levels of trim, with both hard and soft tops in the case of the 90 model. However, changing regulations shut the import doors on the Defender after 1997. For 1998, federal regulations required dual front airbags in all vehicles, and new side-impact safety.

This “safety” idea had never been the Defender’s forte, so making updates was neither simple nor cost effective. Left with little choice, Land Rover was forced to discontinue the model in North America. This left the company with just two offerings at the time — the Discovery I and upmarket Range Rover. Rather limited supply has led to ridiculous pricing on stateside used Defenders in the years since.

SEE ALSO: Land Rover Defender to Make US Return in 2019

A long time coming, Automotive News is now reporting details sourced from Land Rover about a brand-new Defender (U.K. production of the old model, seen above, ceased in January 2016). The new Defender should debut in 2019, and is intended for all global markets. Multiple body styles will be available, and the company assures us the new Defender will look plenty Defender-y, without falling into the retro design trap.

A two-door soft top and four-door hardtop wagon have been confirmed, along with gasoline and diesel power plants. The new Defender will make use of the new Ingenium engine family, the newest engine offerings from Jaguar Land Rover.

Unlike the old Defender’s aluminum panels stamped over a steel frame, the new model will be a modern aluminum unibody, much like the current Range Rover. While many will surely bemoan the Defender’s loss of a traditional frame, it’s quite necessary for crash ratings, emissions standards, comfort, practicality, platform sharing, and probably 210 other reasons.

And with the rest of this change comes a change of venue. The likely production locale for the new model will take place in Slovakia, which is certainly not anywhere near Solihull in Merry England.
