The Range Rover Coupe SUV has a Name

[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com]

Range Rover’s newest SUV “coupe” model is expected to debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

Reportedly called the Range Rover Velar, the coupe SUV will be the most radical-looking Range Rover in recent history, as Land Rover looks to offer its own competitor to the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. Expect the model to slot between the existing Evoque and Range Rover Sport, while riding the same platform as the Jaguar F-Pace.

In terms of size, the Range Rover Velar will likely be a little longer than the Porsche Macan and will comfortably seat five. It will offer generous ground clearance and short front and rear overhangs, suggesting it will be capable of going off road.

Autocar reports the Range Rover Velar will launch with the Ford-sourced V6 engines but they will be eventually replaced with Jaguar Land Rover’s own Ingenium inline-six-cylinder engines. And to appeal to other markets, the British automaker will add a hybrid or plug-in hybrid variant to the lineup.

Look for more information on the Range Rover Velar once it’s unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. AutoGuide.com will be on hand reporting live from the event.

Thieves Rob Millions in Jaguar Land Rover Engines Twice in a Night

It wasn’t exactly the Great Train Robbery, but it was daring and ballsy nonetheless. And quite expensive for the victim — in this case, British automaker Jaguar Land Rover.

The company has egg on its face and no shortage of missing engines after thieves made off with a parked trailer full of high-end motors from the Solihull, U.K., assembly plant last Tuesday night. Two hours later, they returned for more.

According to the Birmingham Mail, the thieves entered the plant’s grounds in a stolen truck, obtained proper paperwork, and hooked up to the parked trailer. Six minutes later, under full view of security cameras, the rig drove out of the security-manned gate and into the night.

SEE ALSO: Jaguar Land Rover to Start Using BMW V8 Engines

Of course, one tractor trailer full of Jaguar Land Rover engines only gets you so far in this world, so the thieves made a return pass. Two hours after the initial robbery, the process was repeated again. A second trailer full of engines vanished the same way as the first, bringing the dollar value of the heist to 3-million pounds ($3.75-million).

“They just hooked up the trailers,” a source told the Mail. “They were in and out in just six minutes with the first theft. The whole place is in uproar about it.”

The trailers have since been recovered, sans engines.

JLR, not surprisingly, wants the engines back and is willing to sweeten the pot for any Good Samaritan who comes forward with information.

“A reward is on offer to anyone who has information which leads to the successful recovery of these engines,” stated the automaker.

Which Automaker Would be Most Impacted by Trump’s Big Border Tax?

0
0

land-rover-trump-big-border-tax

A possible import tax on foreign vehicles could seriously affect automakers, but some more than others.

A study conducted by Baum & Associates estimates how much vehicle prices from individual automakers would have to increase if President Donald Trump’s big border tax comes into effect. For Jaguar Land Rover, that cost could be more than $17,000 per vehicle, since the automaker imports all of its vehicles. Ford, however, with many of its models built in the U.S., would have the smallest price increase at $282 per vehicle, while General Motors follows at $995.

Naturally, it wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense if Jaguar Land Rover vehicles suddenly became $17,000 more expensive in the U.S. Automakers aren’t likely to increase their prices by more than a few thousand dollars, and would likely absorb some of the tax burden.

SEE ALSO: BMW Not Threatened by Trump’s Big Border Tax

The study estimates Volvo would have to raise its prices by about $7,600 on average, while Volkswagen would be $6,800.

The big border tax is under consideration as President Trump continues his campaign of creating more American jobs. Some automakers like Ford have already canceled plans of building factories in neighboring countries, although other automakers like BMW aren’t making a move until something becomes definitive.

Range Rover Sport Plug-in Hybrid Spied With Different Styling

[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com]

The upcoming Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid has been spied with styling that’s distinct from its gas-only sibling.

It’s common for automakers to give their electrified variants some unique accents to show off their eco-friendliness and the Range Rover Sport will be no different. Spy photographers have caught a prototype testing in northern Sweden and there are some slight changes hiding underneath the camouflage. Compared to the regular Range Rover Sport, the plug-in hybrid version will have different bumpers and headlights.

SEE ALSO: Range Rover Sport SVR Slays All-Terrain Acceleration Tests

Interestingly the British automaker also covered up the interior, suggesting that some changes will be happening inside the cabin as well. Spy photographers said the area from the front windshield to the rear seat headrests was concealed.

Expect a four-cylinder engine to be combined with an electric motor for the Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid. The SUV will also likely have a short all-electric range.

Range Rover Spied Testing Plug-In Hybrid Evoque

Land Rover has begun testing the second-generation Range Rover Evoque.

Spy photographers have caught a mule for the next Range Rover Evoque on camera and it appears the British automaker has already attached a new front end to the crossover. The heavy camouflage up front suggests they are testing how the new front end affects cooling. In addition, it appears the next-gen model will be wider, but the use of a mule likely means its wheelbase won’t change.

SEE ALSO: Range Rover Sport Plug-in Hybrid Spied With Different Styling

The next-generation Range Rover Evoque should ride on a new platform designed to take advantage of Jaguar Land Rover’s four-cylinder Ingenium engines. Most interesting is the high voltage sticker that is prominently placed on the rear, confirming this prototype is electrified and likely a plug-in hybrid variant.

Upcoming Range Rover Velar Has a Huge See-Through Roof

Land Rover has released the first official image of the upcoming Range Rover Velar.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Range Rover’s coupe SUV model would sport the Velar nameplate, and now the British automaker has confirmed it. Although the company is withholding details about the model until March 1, it did release a teaser image and announced its world premiere will be on March 1, 2017. It is then expected to be shown at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show before making its U.S. debut at the 2017 New York Auto Show.

The new addition to Range Rover’s lineup intends to slot between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport models, and its name is derived from the original Range Rover prototypes of 1969.

SEE ALSO: The Range Rover Coupe SUV has a Name

“We call the Velar the avant garde Range Rover,” said Land Rover chief design officer Gerry McGovern. “It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”

Rumor has it the Velar is based on the Jaguar F-Pace, so expect something similar in size. As a coupe SUV model, it will compete against the Porsche Macan, Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and BMW X4 models, in what has become a popular segment in the market.

Check back with AutoGuide.com for more details once the veil is pulled off the Range Rover Velar on March 1.

Land Rover Spied Testing Yet Another Plug-in Hybrid Variant

Range Rover will be adding multiple hybrid variants to its SUV lineup in the near future.

In recent weeks, Land Rover has been spied testing both the Range Rover Sport and Evoque models with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and now the regular Range Rover has been caught. Despite the Range Rover getting a facelift late last year, the plug-in version will have a few changes in order to differentiate it from the standard models.

Those changes won’t be drastic, but you can expect slight differences in the headlights and tail lights, along with a different front bumper and possibly a modified grille.

SEE ALSO: Range Rover Spied Testing Plug-In Hybrid Evoque

Like many other automakers, Land Rover is investing into plug-in hybrid variants for its models to increase efficiency across its lineup. Expect the standard Range Rover plug-in hybrid to also offer a short all-electric range.

Top 10 Least Dependable Automakers: 2017

0
0

top-10-least-dependable-automakers-2017

Certain automakers continue to struggle when it comes to the dependability of their vehicles.

The J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Dependability Study has been released, based on responses from 35,186 original owners of 2014 model year vehicles, and for some brands it’s not a good day. The study examines problems experienced by owners during the past 12 months with overall dependability determined by the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). A higher score reflects lower quality.

This year’s industry average is 156 PP100, marking a 4 PP100 increase from 2016.

SEE ALSO: Top Automaker in Germany’s Vehicle Dependability Study is Surprising

The most problematic area continues to be the audio/communication/entertainment/navigation (ACEN) category and for the third consecutive year, the problems most reported by owners are Bluetooth pairing and connectivity and built-in voice recognition misinterpreting commands.

New to the list this year for problems is battery failure. Compared to 2016, 44 percent more owners reported a battery failure this year and batteries were the most frequently replacement component not related to normal wear and tear in three-year-old vehicles.

Here are the 10 least dependable automakers, the 2017 edition..

10. Acura

2017-acura-ilx

Unlike Honda, which finished in the top 10 of the most dependable automakers list, Acura struggles with dependability. This year, the luxury arm scored 167 PP100. This marks a sharp contrast compared to last year, when Acura finished eighth overall with a score of 129 PP100. The Acura ILX however did finish third in the compact premium car category, while the Acura RDX was second in the compact premium SUV segment.

9. Nissan

2017-nissan-versa-note

Nissan continues to struggle on the J.D. Power U.S. Dependability Study, finding itself once again in the bottom 10. This year, Nissan is the ninth-worst automaker, which is a slight improvement compared to last year where it was the sixth-worst brand. This year the Japanese automaker scored 170 PP100 compared to last year’s 173 PP100. The Nissan Versa did come away with second place in the small car segment and the Nissan Frontier also placed second in the midsize pickup category.

8. Land Rover

range-rover-svautobiography-dynamic

Land Rover improves, but is still one of the least dependable automakers. Sister company Jaguar landed in 10th place for most dependable, but the SUV maker is struggling with its owners. This year, Land Rover scored 178 PP100, an improvement from last year’s 198 PP100 that help make it the fourth-worst automaker. None of Land Rover’s vehicles were recognized in their segments.

7. Mitsubishi

2017-mitsubishi-mirage-gt

Like Acura, Mitsubishi saw a decline in dependability this year, but its drop wasn’t as harsh. Last year, the company still performed below the industry average (152 PP100) with a score of 161 PP100. This year, it scores 182 PP100, so owners are reporting more problems than previously. Like Land Rover, Mitsubishi had no models rank in the top three in their segments.

6. Ford

2018-ford-mustang-gt

Ford did improve compare to its 2016 finish, where it was second worst on the list. With a score of 183 PP100, Ford owners are still running into a multitude of problems with their 2014 model year vehicles, but its an improvement from the 204 PP100 Ford scored in 2016. Even though Ford is at the bottom of the list, the Mustang did finish second in the midsize sporty car category, only bested by the Camaro in terms of dependability.

5. Ram

2017-ram-1500

Ram was the ninth most dependable automaker in 2016, but this year it’s one of the worst. With a score of 183 PP100, it actually ties Ford but that’s not even good news for the brand. In 2016, owners reported 129 problems per 100 vehicles, so problems are now surfacing with owners. Despite this, the Ram 1500 tied for third place with the Chevrolet Silverado in the large light duty pickup category.

4. Dodge

2017-dodge-challenger

This year, the folks at Dodge can celebrate for not being the worst dependable automaker like it was in 2016. With a score of 187 PP100, Dodge improves from its dead last finish in 2016, when it scored 208 PP100. Dodge does have one dependable model however, as the Grand Caravan did finish third in the minivan category, possibly from a lack of competitors.

3. Infiniti

2017-infiniti-q60

It’s a bit of a surprise to see Infiniti as one of the least dependable automakers in this year’s study, finishing with a score of 203 PP100. Last year, the luxury Japanese automaker performed better than the industry average with a score of 136 PP100, making it the 13th most dependable automaker. No Infiniti models ranked in the top three of their segments.

2. Jeep

2017-jeep-compass

Jeep saw its performance decline year-over-year, finishing second to last at the bottom of the list. With a score of 209 PP100, Jeep owners are running into various issues with their vehicles. In 2016, the American automaker scored 161 PP100 and was the fifth-worst automaker overall. Jeep also had no models rank in their respective segments.

1. Fiat

2017-fiat-500l

For several years, Fiat struggled on J.D. Power’s U.S. Dependability Study, but it appeared things may have taken a turn last year when the Italian automaker scored 171 PP100 and making it the seventh-worst automaker. This year however, Fiat is back to being the least dependable automaker with a score of 298 PP100, which is a surprisingly wide gap compared to Jeep. Not surprisingly, no Fiat model ranked in the top three of their segments.

Land Rover has introduced the fourth member of the Range Rover family.

Called the Range Rover Velar, the midsize luxury SUV aims to deliver new levels of refinement, elegance and technology to the segment. The model will slot between the existing Evoque and Range Rover Sport offerings, riding on a 113.15-inch wheelbase to offer a 34.4-cubic feet luggage compartment. Like all Range Rover vehicles, the Velar offers exceptional capability on a variety of surfaces, terrains and weather conditions. The standard coil springs offer 8.38 inches of ground clearance, while the optional four-corner air suspension gives 9.88 inches.

Land Rover says the Range Rover Velar was “created from a clean sheet using Jaguar Land Rover’s Lightweight Aluminum Architecture” and represents the next chapter of the automaker’s success story. Its design is the most aerodynamically-efficient Land Rover ever produced, and helping contribute to its coefficient of drag of only 0.32Cd are flush deployable door handles.

The cabin houses a new Land Rover Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, featuring two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens that integrate seamlessly into the cabin architecture to reduce the complexity of the dash. Unique to the segment is a premium textile seat material that is available as an optional alternative to leather.

2017 Geneva Motor Show Coverage

In the U.S., the Range Rover Velar will launch with several powertrain offerings, with the base model equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 247 horsepower. There is also a four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine offering 180 hp and 317 pound-feet of torque, while at the top of the range is the powerful supercharged V6 gasoline engine with 380 hp. All engines are matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics. Along with the three different powertrains, buyers can choose from four specifications including Standard, S, SE or HSE.

At launch is a special First Edition model available exclusively in one of three colors: Corris Grey, Silicon Silver or Flux Silver. It will be limited to approximately 500 units in the U.S. with a starting price of $90,295 and is powered solely by the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine. Extra features that come standard on the First Edition model include full-extended leather interior, copper weave carbon fiber trim finisher, perforated Windsor leather seats finished in two-tone Light Oyster/Ebony, special 22-inch Split-Spoke wheels with diamond-turned finish and a 1,600-watt Meridian Signature Sound System.

Top 10 Worst Cars of 2017: Consumer Reports

0
0

top-10-worst-cars-of-2017-consumer-reports

These are the cars you should avoid purchasing, according to the folks at Consumer Reports.

By combining road-test scores, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction and safety (including government and insurance industry crash-test results), Consumer Reports comes up with an Overall Score for each model tested. These are the worst picks in 10 popular categories, based on the lowest Overall Score.

SEE ALSO: Top 10 Best Cars of 2017: Consumer Reports

In other words, if you have the option to purchase something else, Consumer Reports says you should. Otherwise, there’s a good chance you’ll regret your purchase in due time.

Here are the worst cars of 2017:

Worst Subcompact Car: Mitsubishi Mirage

2017-mitsubishi-mirage

There’s a good reason the Mitsubishi Mirage is one of the cheapest cars available on the market. It may return a respectable 37-mpg overall, but even the updates for the 2017 model year doesn’t save it from being the lowest-rated subcompact car. Consumer Reports notes the weak, vibrating three-cylinder engine that delivers sluggish acceleration, as well as the “clumsy roly-poly handling.” It also makes the worst cars of 2017 list because the interior feels drab, cheap and insubstantial.

Worst Compact Electric/Hybrid: Mitsubishi i-MiEV

2014-mitsubishi-i-miev

You may have forgotten the Mitsubishi i-MiEV even exists. In a world where the Tesla Model S and even the Nissan Leaf have improved substantially since they were first introduced, the i-MiEV has kept along with its mediocre performance. It’s slow to charge and only gets an EPA-rated 62 miles. In other words, any other option on the market is better than the i-MiEV if you’re considering an electric vehicle.

Worst Compact Car: Fiat 500L

2017-fiat-500l

With much worse than average reliability, the Fiat 500L isn’t really impressing anyone so it’s no surprise it landed on the worst cars of 2017 list. It earned a dismal road-test score due to a stiff ride, flat seats and an odd driving position and according to Consumer Reports‘ extensive owner satisfaction survey, a high percentage of owners wish they never bought the car. It also scored Poor in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) small-overlap front crash test.

Worst Midsized Sedan: Chrysler 200

2017-chrysler-200-sedan

The Chrysler 200 isn’t long for this world, so it’s likely it won’t be a worst pick for much longer once dealers stop selling it. Consumer Reports says the Chrysler 200 “drives like it’s from a previous era,” adding that the handling is clumsy and the ride is unsettled. In addition, the four-cylinder engine is underwhelming and the transmission mated to it is uncooperative. The 200 not only has the lowest Overall Score, it also has the lowest road-test score in the class and lowest predicted reliability rating.

Worst Compact Pickup: Toyota Tacoma

2016-toyota-tacoma

It may be surprising to see a Toyota being named in a lowest-rated category, but that’s exactly what the Tacoma has been honored with. As the worst compact pickup, the Tacoma has a stiff ride, ponderous handling, loud cabin and awkward driving position. Although the modern connectivity features are a welcome upgrade as well as the new high-tech safety features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, they’re not enough to overcome the truck’s shortcomings.

Worst Midsized SUV: Dodge Journey

2017-dodge-journey

With below-average reliability and poor performance in IIHS small-overlap frontal crash tests, the Dodge Journey isn’t winning over Consumer Reports. The midsized SUV has a confining interior and lacks agility, while the V6 engine delivers the worst fuel economy in its class. Don’t be tempted with all the discounts happening on the Journey since it’s late in its model run, it’s a poor value even at an airport rental lot.

Worst Entry-Level Luxury Car: Mercedes-Benz CLA

2017-mercedes-benz-cla-class

The Mercedes-Benz CLA hasn’t been receiving high marks from Consumer Reports since it arrived on the market, and that continues to be the case. The entry-level model has an unresponsive engine where power comes on abruptly, a punishingly stiff ride and a loud cabin. And while it’s advertised with a cheap entry price, that total adds up quickly when you want any sort of luxury in your CLA.

Worst Luxury Midsized Sedan: Maserati Ghibli

2017-maserati-ghibli

The Maserati Ghibli is admittedly fun to drive with sporty and agile handling, great brakes and a potent engine. But fuel economy is dismal at 19-mpg overall and the stiff ride can grow tiring. Passengers in the rear may not have a great time due to the cramped space. To top it all off, it has much worse than average reliability.

Worst Luxury Compact SUV: Land Rover Discovery Sport

2016-land-rover-discovery-sport

Surprisingly, Consumer Reports says the Land Rover Discovery Sport struggles in comparisons against even mass-market small SUVs. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine has spiky power delivery, and the transmission is neither smooth nor responsive. The handling doesn’t live up to the model’s nameplate, and the interior is rather plain for a model that should be luxurious. And based on Land Rover’s history, reliability is a concern when it comes to this expensive, underachieving SUV.

Worst Luxury SUV: Cadillac Escalade

2017-cadillac-escalade

Speaking of expensive, underachieving SUVs, the Cadillac Escalade is the lowest-rated luxury SUV and caps off the worst cars of 2017 list. A stiff ride, poor handling and braking performance all contribute to making the Escalade worst in its class. The third row is cramped while the second-row seats are too low and reliability ranks worst in class. If you’re really in the market for an American SUV, look towards the Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Yukon XL – unless you really want that Cadillac badge up front.

The Only 8 Cars for Real People That Debuted in Geneva

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

The Geneva Motor Show is known for being the fanciest auto show in the world.

As the show where exotic carmakers like Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren show off their latest supercars, some of the more mainstream new vehicle debuts get overshadowed by the six-figure, mega-powerful, limited-run playthings for rich people. Not all of us are Kardashians, Mayweathers or Ronaldos, so while all the fancy new supercars are fun to look at, they’re not exactly relevant to most of us.

Here are pretty much the only eight cars for real people (people who aren’t millionaires) that debuted at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. There were actually quite a few “regular people” cars in  Geneva, but these are the only ones relevant to the North American market.

Subaru Crosstrek

subaru-crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek debuted with a refreshed look that a bit less awkward and little improvements all around that give the crossover better driving dynamics and make it more adept off-road. The all-new platform makes the Crosstrek safer, more efficient and quieter.

Ford Fiesta ST

2018-ford-fiesta-st

As far as fun for the masses goes, the Ford Fiesta ST is the poster child for cheap thrills. This new Ford hot hatch made its debut at the Geneva show with a new itty-bitty three-cylinder engine that outputs 200 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

2018-mitsubishi-eclipse-cross

It’s not the sporty Eclipse coupe we remember from our teenage years, but Mitsubishi has revived the name for its new compact crossover. The uniquely styled crossover will likely come to North America with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Volvo XC60

2017-volvo-xc60

If you loved the look of the XC90 when it came out but thought it was too big, the new Volvo XC60 is the crossover you’ve been waiting for. With the same handsome look and swanky interior as its big brother, this Volvo is sure to be a hit.

Honda Civic Type R

honda-civic-type-r

One of the standout “regular people” new car debuts was the new Honda Civic Type R. This production model looks a lot like the concept/prototype we saw last year. This Type R, which is FINALLY coming to North America, comes with a turbo four-cylinder with 306 hp.

Toyota Yaris GRMN

Toyota Yaris GRMN

The refreshed Toyota Yaris debuted at Geneva, but the more exciting news was that the humble economy car will now be offered as a hot hatch. With a supercharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, this Toyota Yaris GRMN will be a ton of fun to drive.

Volkswagen Arteon

Volkswagen Arteon-2017 Geneva Motor Show

The new Volkswagen Arteon is a fastback sedan that will replace the CC and act like an Audi A7 for people with smaller budgets. The sedan will come with all the latest technology, luxury car features, and a lot of room for passengers and cargo.

Range Rover Velar

range-rover-velar

A Range Rover isn’t exactly a “regular person” car, but with a price tag of about $50,000, this new Velar is not impossibly out of reach. In addition to being able to off-road like a real Range Rover, this Velar is stylish, comes with all the latest tech, and offers three different engine choices.

Poll: Land Rover Discovery or Audi Q7?

Land Rover Discovery or Audi Q7

Which luxury SUV would you rather own, the brand-new Land Rover Discovery or the ever-capable Audi Q7?

Rover’s latest offering is fresh from the ground up, riding atop an aluminum-intensive architecture that’s helped it lose about 1,000 pounds compared to the LR4 it replaces. Of course, this materials change comes with no sacrifice in off-road capability. The Discovery is still loaded with tons of military-grade hardware, making it an absolute beast.

Two engines are available in North America and both displace 3.0-liters. The more popular option will likely be a supercharged gasoline model that’s good for 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A diesel is also available, providing 254 ponies and 443 lb-ft of torque along with significantly better fuel economy.

The gasoline model stickers at 16 miles per gallon city and 21 highway; the diesel will do 21 around town and 26 on highway jaunts. No matter which engine you choose, they’re both paired with a slick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Audi Q7 is a popular luxury SUV and for good reason. Its combination of handsome styling, advanced technology and polite on-road manners are tough to top.

Behind its large grille, you’ll find one of two engines. A base 2.0-liter turbocharged four is on the menu, but the option you’ll probably want is the up-market V6. Displacing 3.0-liters, this supercharged gasoline unit is rated at 333 horsepower. Torque clocks in at 325 lb-ft. Both an eight-speed automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive are included with this engine.

Where Land Rover’s Discovery tends to prioritize go-anywhere capability, the Audi emphasizes technology. Just one of its segment-leading features is a digital instrument cluster, Virtual Cockpit in Ingolstadt parlance. Here, traditional gauges are replaced by an immersive, high-resolution display that’s unexpectedly customizable.

So, that’s a quick look at each of these high-end vehicles. Which one do YOU prefer? Well, compare them here and make sure to choose a favorite by voting in our poll!

Jaguar-Land Rover Files a Slew of Trademarks Hinting at Possible Future Models

jaguar-land-rover-trademarks

JaguarLand Rover has filed 29 trademarks for model names since March 13, 2017.

While the volume of filing activity would be considered odd for most companies, the behavior isn’t entirely unusual for Jaguar Land Rover since the company typically files numerous trademarks at a time. There were also some trademarks filed around February 22, although many of those are for existing models.

Some of the notable trademarks recently filed include Westminster, XJS, Freestyle, Landy, Range Rover Classic, P-Type, T-Type, C-XE, iXE, diXE, XEdi, XEi, CXF, CXJ, Sawtooth, Stormer and Landmark. It’s unlikely the British automaker plans on using all of these nameplates, but it’s standard for automakers to trademark names under consideration.

The Jaguar XJS nameplate is one that has been used previously, while Freestyle appears to be a variant of Freelander for Land Rover. The XE variants hint at an electric version of the sedan, similar to the I-Pace name. P-Type and T-Type seem tantalizingly related to F-Type, so could we see an expansion of Jaguar’s sports car lineup? As for the rest, your guess is as good as ours. There’s a good chance the company never uses some of them at all.

worst-three-row-vehicles-of-2017-consumer-reports

Not all three-row vehicles are comfortable.

Consumer Reports has released its list of the worst three-row vehicles available this year, based on seat comfort and ease of access to the third-row seat. That means other considerations weren’t factored in, such as test performance and reliability.

But if you’re in the market for a three-row vehicle and seat comfort along with ease of access are priorities, you may want to avoid these vehicles.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

2017-range-rover-sport

Priced from $66,645 including destination, the Range Rover Sport from Land Rover can be purchased with either a 3.0-liter V6 engine with 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque or a 3.0-liter diesel engine with 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The standard gasoline engine returns 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for a 19-mpg combined rating, while the diesel is rated at 22-mpg city and 28-mpg highway for a 25-mpg combined rating.

With seating for up to seven, the Kia Sorento is an affordable option starting from $26,495. There’s also a plethora of engines to choose from, with the standard model offering a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 185 hp. There’s also a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 240 hp and at the top of the range is a 3.3-liter V6 with 290 hp. Volvo XC90

2017-volvo-xc90

There’s a lot to like about the Volvo XC90, but it’s not exactly the easiest to get into or the most comfortable for the third-row passengers, according to Consumer Reports. The luxury SUV starts from $53,245 if you plan on seating seven, which means opting for the T6 AWD model. That does net a 316-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque gasoline engine that returns up to 25 mpg on the highway.

Dodge Journey

2017-dodge-journey

It may be plenty affordable with a $22,240 starting price, but the Dodge Journey isn’t ideal to actually go on a journey in for third-row passengers. There is, however, the award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine under the hood with 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, although it comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 173 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque. Folding the rear seats gets you up to 67.6 cubic feet of cargo space.

BMW X5

2017-bmw-x5

It’s one of the most popular luxury SUVs on the market, but Consumer Reports doesn’t recommend it when it comes to ease of access and comfort for third-row passengers. The standard model is the BMW X5 sDrive35i powered by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Priced from $56,495, the BMW X5 has a wide range of options and powertrains available that could push that ticket price well over $70,000.

Hyundai Santa Fe

2017-hyundai-santa-fe

The seven-seater Hyundai Santa Fe starts from $31,695 with a maximum of 80 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the front seats. Under the hood is a 3.3-liter V6 providing 290 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe returns a respectable 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Audi Q7

2017-audi-q7

Another luxury SUV on the list, the Audi Q7 starts from $49,950 and that includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Maximum cargo volume is 71.6 cubic feet, but you’ll have to sacrifice the seating for seven. The other engine option is a 3.0-liter supercharged six-cylinder engine with 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque and that demands a $6,500 premium.

Land Rover Discovery to Get Hardcore Off-Road Model

0

Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division is said to be working on a new Discovery variant that places an extreme emphasis on off-road capability.

Not much is known about the upcoming off-roader, with SVO Boss John Edwards remaining fairly tight-lipped when he mentioned the model to AutoExpress. He said he imagines the car “will be in between Paris Dakar and Camel Trophy,” which are two world famous off-road races (the latter being defunct) that frequently feature Land Rover vehicles.

As with other off-road focused SUVs, it’s likely that heightened suspension, knobby off-road tires, tough body cladding  and an off-road ready chassis will all be in store for the extra capable Discovery.  The model may be based off of the 254 horsepower 3.0-liter diesel engine in Europe and abroad, but if it makes it to North America, the presence of the 340 horsepower 3.0-liter supercharged V6 is much more likely. Ideally, both engines will be offered in the off-road friendly variant.

Land Rover says it plans on introducing an all-new halo model every three or four years, which means the off-road Discovery may arrive late this year in time for an early 2018 launch or sometime next year. The last production Land Rover to leave the automaker’s ‘Special Vehicle’ center was the Range Rover Sport SVR – a sport focused model that makes 550 horsepower from Jaguar Land Rover’s supercharger 5.0-liter V8 engine. It was first shown in 2015, meaning a new halo car from Land Rover should be just around the corner.

Poll: Range Rover Sport or Lexus GX 460?

Range Rover Sport or Lexus GX 460

Off-road-focused luxury SUVs are the subject of today’s poll, with the Range Rover Sport facing off against a stalwart in the segment, Lexus’ GX 460.

The Range Rover in this tossup offers two different engines. There’s a supercharged gasoline 3.0-liter V6. It delivers a capable 340 horsepower with 332 lb-ft of twist.

For extra torque and greater fuel efficiency, drivers can opt for a turbo-diesel of the same configuration and displacement. It delivers a decent 254 ponies with an earth-shattering 443 lb-ft of twist. Both engines will accelerate this portly vehicle (it weighs around 4,800 pounds) to 60 miles an hour in the neighborhood of seven seconds.

Appropriately, an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard with both engines, as is advanced, full-time four-wheel drive. The latter includes Range Rover’s Terrain Response system, which allows the driver to alter how the vehicle reacts to different surfaces, from rocks, to sand, to ice and more.

As for the Lexus, it’s only offered with one engine, a silken gasoline V8 clocking in at 4.6-liters. That displacement provides a meager 301 horses with 329 lb-ft of torque, but don’t let those numbers fool you, this SUV has plenty of get-up-and-go.

A six-speed automatic transmission sends power to the ground through a heavy-duty four-wheel-drive system. This beast comes with a Torsen center differential; low-range gearing; Kenetic Dynamic Suspension, which reduces body roll without destroying ride quality; crawl control; and much more.

Outweighing the Sport, in Luxury trim this Lexus weighs a husky 5,198 pounds and is rated at just 17 miles per gallon combined. In comparison, a gasoline-powered Range Rover should average 19 MPG; the diesel will do 28.
