Land Rover Defender Will be Entry-Level Vehicle

The Land Rover Defender is slated for sale here in the U.S., and when it hits dealers it will be the British Brand’s entry-level vehicle.

The Defender could be on sale here by 2015, and it will be based on the DC100 concept that debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. When it does go on sale, it will undercut the Range Rover Evoque Pure, which starts at $41,995, making it the cheapest product in the Land Rover lineup.

Parent company Tata says that Land Rover is moving towards more volume sales, and looking to move away from being a niche automaker. But he also added, ”We will not be catering to all customers.”

Jaguar Land Rover Still Pushing for Dual-Brand Stores

0
0

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is pushing for more dealers to integrate both brands into a single showroom in an effort to compete better with other luxury brands.

It hopes in doing so, customers will find a better, more convenient buying experience. People in the market for something from either brand are likely to consider buying from BMW, Audi or Mercedes, all of which offer a wider variety of vehicles in a single showroom. Integrating both brands in a single store will offer the same advantage. JLR North American boss Andy Goss announced the plan during the summer.

The switch isn’t mandatory for now, but Goss said there is only one future for the brand and that involves consolidation.

Goss reiterated the plan during the grand opening of Prestige Jaguar Land Rover in Paramus, New Jersey. A 68,000 square-foot facility, Prestige is already the highest volume Land Rover dealer in the U.S., but recently purchased a Jaguar dealer to combine them into one location.

As more dealerships embody the brand’s goal, Goss hopes to come closer to achieving 100,000 annual unit sales in North America, which would represent nearly double Jaguar and Land Rover’s combined 2011 sales.

Jaguar, Land Rover Looking to Share Platforms

0
0

Jaguar and Land Rover are looking towards the success of Volkswagen‘s MQB platform in order to produce a shared platform that could underpin 70 to 80 percent of the automakers’ main, high-volume models.

Current Land Rover models are produced across four different platforms, while Jaguar has separate platforms for its XF, XJ, and XK models. The two automakers already share infotainment systems, seats, and drivetrains, but finding a scalable platform that will work for both British automakers will cut costs significantly.

Jaguar’s global brand director, Adrian Hallmark, did acknowledge that it’s a work-in-progress and is certainly nothing that will happen overnight. But the goal is to have two to three platforms across both brands.

Land Rover to Expand Lineup to 16 Models by 2020

Land Rover is looking to broaden its model lineup to 16 vehicles by 2020, easily the largest investment the British automaker has ever made in its products, as it looks to take advantage of the booming SUV market.

Land Rover plans on expanding all three of its model families, including additional models to the Range Rover lineup, a new Defender family of vehicles, and four new SUVs for the Freelander family over the next seven years.

According to the automaker’s design director, Gerry McGovern, Land Rover will extend its Range Rover family to to six models, including a larger ‘Evoque XL’ model and a convertible Evoque. In addition, a smaller three-door Range Rover is being considered, measuring in slightly over 13 feet.

Land Rover will also be expanding its lineup with ‘leisure’ models which will add at least five new models including an entry-level Freelander that will be similar in size to the current Evoque. The Freelander will so a redesign with both five-seater and seven-seater offerings. At the top of the range will be a new Discovery and will be a flagship model to compete against the BMW X5.

As for its ‘dual purpose’ or ‘utility’ segment, the automaker is hinting that a production version of the DC100 will be heading to the showrooms while a replacement will be incoming for the Defender. The new Defender will also be available in five- or seven-seater form while a crew-cab pickup will join the model lineup.

Range Rover Evoque Dakar Rally Racer Revealed

Over a year ago, Excite Rallye Raid Team announced that it would be competing in the Dakar Rally with a race-prepped Range Rover Evoque. The British rally team has unveiled the first photos of its Dakar Rally competitor.

Excite Rallye Raid Team worked in collaboration with RaBe Race Cars on the Range Rover Evoque build that recently went testing in Holland prior to its competition debut at the grueling Dakar Rally. The matte black Evoque has been nicknamed ‘Desert Warrior 3′ and so far in testing, it has performed well according to the team.

“The vehicle has a real presence. It’s very well put-together, it’s strong and rugged,” said professional British driver John Hardy in a release. “The thought and attention to detail is  mind-blowing; all the dials are at eye level, all the switches are where they need to be and the space in the cockpit will be critical as we’ll be spending hours strapped in!”

Rather than the factory 2.0-liter turbocharged Ford engine, under the hood is a BMW-sourced 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged diesel engine with 271 hp and a ZF six-speed automatic transmission. It’ll compete on BF Goodrich desert tires while coilover suspension comes courtesy of Reiger. To ensure it lasts the competition, a 69-gallon fuel tank has been installed into the crossover to give it a driving range of around 750 miles.

Range Rover Sport R-S Coming After Sport Debuts

Land Rover is readying an even hotter version of its Range Rover Sport, which won’t debut until next year.

After that happens, Land Rover’s chief of chassis systems, David Waide, says the company will have already been preparing a flagship version of the SUV.While official details on the car are still unavailable, the 2013 Range Rover’s aluminum architecture will carry over to offer huge benefits.

The lighter chassis, Range Rover says, will allow the Sport (seen above) to have a much different feel than the normal Range Rover. Of course, those benefits would be amplified in an R-S version which would be even more purpose-built for performance.

Still, the car won’t aim to beat the current segment-topping Porsche Cayenne GTS. Instead, the brand says it will be a balance between sports performance and comfort, much like the XKR-S.

2014 Range Rover Sport to Feature Distinctive Styling

Land Rover is currently working on its second-generation Range Rover Sport SUV, which will feature much more aggressive styling to differentiate itself from the standard Range Rover model.

According to design director Gerry McGovern, the next-gen Range Rover Sport “would be given more personality than before,” so that it can be “separated a bit more,” from the Range Rover. The New Range Rover Sport is set to make its debut in the middle of next year and will be on sale before the end of 2013.

Rumor has it that the British automaker is potentially adding a seven-seater option for the Range Rover Sport for the first time in the model’s history, though McGovern did not confirm the option. In fact, the design director stated that it would be a “challenge” to give the Range Rover Sport a seven-seat option given its sporty profile.

The new Range Rover Sport will be built on Jaguar Land Rover’s Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA) which features a riveted and bonded aluminum monocoque to help shave significant weight – up to 660 lbs, making it around 4,761 lbs. In addition, insiders have reported that Land Rover is considering a four-cylinder powerplant for the Sport model, shaving more weight and enhancing fuel efficiency for those not seeking a high-performance SUV.

2013 Land Rover LR2 Gets EPA Rated 20 MPG Combined

0
0

For 2013, the Land Rover LR2 dropped the 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine from its lineup in favor of a turbocharged four banger, which has now been EPA rated at 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway for a combined 20 mpg.

These fuel numbers best the previous engine by 2 mpg on the highway and in the city, and 3 mpg combined, all while making 10 more hp and more torque. Poor fuel economy was cited as one of the major issues with the outgoing model, though despite the improvement, the LR2 still falls short of some of its competitors.

The 2013 Audi Q5 with a four-cylinder gets 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway according to the EPA, though it falls 30 hp short of the LR2. The 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine gets 21 mpg city and 28 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA, also beating out the LR2 in fuel efficiency.

Three trims are offered on the LR2, all three of which got a price bump of about $700 over the previous model. The starting trim, just called LR2, starts at $37,250, while the middle of the road HSE can be had for $39, 750. All dressed up in HSE LUX trim, the LR2 sells for $42,350.

Spy photos of the Range Rover Sport wearing the least camouflage to date show the car’s wider body and more sloping roofline.

AutoGuide’s spy photographers caught the car during cold weather testing today. The performance luxury SUV is expected to come with both diesel and gasoline engines, although the U.S. market is likely to only get the gas version if history is an indicator.

The V8 is expected to be sourced from Jaguar’s shelves — likely the same supercharged engine found in the XKR with 510 hp.

Official details are still unavailable, but customers can expect this new generation to handle much better than the outgoing model. At least it seems very likely given the strikingly improved driving dynamics in the all-new 2013 Range Rover.

Land Rover will likely debut the new vehicle during the Frankfurt Auto Show late this year, although an official debut has yet to be announced.

The 2013 Range Rover went on sale in December, 2012 and now most Land Rover dealerships in the country are sold out of the new SUV until summer.

At the National Automobile Dealers Association Convention, Land Rover dealers were told that the British automaker is trying to get as many Range Rovers to America as possible, but demand is tight worldwide. According to Chris Marchand, executive vice president of operations at Jaguar Land Rover North America, “the vehicle is sold out for six months to a year.”

Because of the limited supply for the 2013 Range Rover, the automaker has decided to not bring the base model to the U.S. Instead, Americans’ entry level model will be the HSE which starts at $88,545 including destination fee. The HSE comes with a panoramic roof, 20-inch wheels and tires, and a premium stereo system.

2014 Range Rover to Add Supercharged V6 to Lineup

The 2013 model year Range Rover saw some impressive changes with a complete redesign that also boasted over 700 pounds shed off its body compared to its predecessor.

And while sales has been impressive for the new Range Rover, the British automaker is planning to replace the naturally aspirated V8 for the 2014 model year with a 3.0-liter, supercharged V6 engine that’s currently found in the base Jaguar XJ.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Range Rover Sold Out Until Summer

Boasting 340 hp, the V6 will be found in the base Range Rover and HSE models, while the Supercharged and Autobiography models will continue to use the supercharged V8 powerplant with 510 hp. As for fuel economy, the supercharged V6 is expected to get around 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

Other rumored changes for the 2014 model year include optional Adaptive Cruise Control for $1,295 while stop/start will be standard on the supercharged V8 model. In addition, the Active Rear Locking Differential will no longer be available as a standalone option, and the Tow Package will be priced at $1,300.

Diesel Hybrid Fits US Market: Land Rover Exec Says

0
0

Fine folks in Europe will get a gift from Land Rover soon: a diesel hybrid version of the 2013 Range Rover. But it won’t be marketed to Americans… for now.

“We’ve got to introduce diesel, we’ve got to introduce hybrid, we’ve got to introduce plug-in hybrid,” Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) North American CEO Andy Goss said during a recent conversation at the Chicago Auto Show.

“Without a doubt, diesel hybrid will make sense in the U.S.,” Goss said. “I think it will take to the diesel,” he said of the U.S. automotive market, albeit not to the same degree as Europe.

But bringing a diesel hybrid to the U.S. will mean more than clearing out a shipping crate and making space on a freightliner. European emissions standards are lax compared to the U.S., which prevented the unusual combo from coming here.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Land Rover Review

The latest in a series of increasingly strict rules, called Euro6, will come into play in 2014 essentially leveling the playing field and allowing automakers to spread research and development dollars over more of the map.

“We’ve not confirmed timing for the U.S., but clearly once that technology is developed and has hit Europe, there will be a certain point [when] it would make perfect sense to have that vehicle in the U.S.”

DIESELS’ DIFFERENT REPUTATION IN AMERICA

U.S. diesel sales have a different traditional audience than the broad stroke brush makers can count on in Europe. People here often think of diesel as dirty stuff meant for construction site machinery. Certainly not the fodder of fine luxury products built to pamper your prince-and-princess lifestyle. Or is it?

Other companies are turning to the formerly filthy fuel, but none in the same niche. Ram just announced a V6 diesel for its light-duty half-ton pickup. Meanwhile, the same motor will power the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Chevrolet sees space in the compact sedan market and aims to fill it this year with the diesel Cruze – a space Volkswagen sat in, happily munching strudel and keeping to itself. Then there’s the Japanese take on things: with the 2014 Mazda6 set to get a diesel 4-cylinder in exchange for a gas V6 engine.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Range Rover Debuts, Diesel Hybrid Confirmed

But none of those will compete with a Range Rover. On the other hand, a BMW X5d or Mercedes ML350 BlueTec might come close. They’re still tens of thousands shy of an option-laden Land Rover product, but there’s clearly a market for luxury diesel SUVs in the U.S.

Of course, Goss is wise to that and outlined a possible plan that would see JLR slowly juicing up its product line toward offering a diesel hybrid. There are steps to climb first, though.

“We’re at a model cadence now where it’s [about] deciding what [and] when we will do that. But without that, we can’t get to where we need to get to.”

When asked about timing, he said “We can’t be specific yet, but it’s a serious serious live conversation.”

Land Rover to Debut 9-Speed Transmission at Geneva Motor Show

0
0

At the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, Land Rover will debut the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission, developed in partnership with ZF, a world leader in transmission technology.

Called the ZF 9HP, the world’s first nine-speed automatic for a passenger car is specifically designed for transverse applications and will be one of the most efficient and technically advanced transmissions ever used in a production vehicle. Leading the way in technological advancements on the 9HP is a skip-shift function that allows for much faster downshifting under rapid deceleration.

SEE MORE: Hyundai 10-Speed Transmission in Development

Not only will the vehicles benefit from the ninth gear in terms of fuel efficiency, the lower engine revs will also improve comfort and reduce engine noise when cruising at high speeds. Even more impressive is that the 9HP is less than 0.24 inches longer while weighing 16.5 pounds less than the outgoing six-speed transmission.

“We are extremely excited about the 9HP which has been tailored exactly to dovetail with the unique attributes of our vehicles. It will add another layer of performance, refinement and efficiency, further enhancing Land Rover’s world class abilities,” said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director.

Land Rover Defender EV Coming to 2013 Geneva Show

0
0

For this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Land Rover is bringing seven pure-electric Defender research vehicles that will be undergoing “specialist real world trials” later this year.

Though a replacement for the Defender is long overdue, the British automaker will be using the current model as experimental vehicles to test its new electric powertrain. Replacing the standard powerplant in each of the Defenders is a 94-hp electric motor capable of 447 lb-ft of torque installed by the British automaker’s Advanced Engineering Team.

SEE ALSO: 2013 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW PREVIEW

The electric motor will be mated to a 300-volt, lithium-ion battery that has a capacity of 27 kWh, providing a range of more than 50 miles. The 903 lb. battery will be mounted under the hood, boosting the weight to around 220 pounds more than its diesel counterpart.

To keep the Defender’s off-road capability intact, Land Rover has also implemented a modified variant of its terrain response system, along with retaining the standard model’s four-wheel drive system and differential lock.

Land Rover Brings Nine-Speed Automatic to 2013 Geneva Motor Show

0
0

Land Rover is displaying the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission for a passenger car at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

The transmission, developed in collaboration with ZF, is a nine-speed gearbox with a higher top gear in a more compact design in order to fit in the same space as the current six-speed transmissions. Dubbed 9HP, the new transmission will provide smoother gear shifts with improved accelerations and lower fuel consumption according to the British automaker.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Geneva Motor Show Coverage

Rumors suggested ZF had been developing the 9HP since 2011, but the company was silent on which automaker it was for. The 9HP features a modular design with a software-based transmission control unit. This allows the gearbox to fit into transverse engines without significant modifications to the vehicle. Despite being 0.24 inches longer than the six-speed it’ll ultimately replace, it weighs 16.5 pounds less.

According to Land Rover, the 9HP reduces acceleration time to 62 mph (100 km/h) by two seconds compared to the current six-speeds. It has been tested to reduce fuel consumption by 12 percent in gasoline SUVs and 16 percent on diesels. ZF also said the 9HP will also be suitable for hybrid systems.
